    Anything Wrong With Shooting Hollowpoints?

I went to the cowpalace and noticed they were selling Winchester .45 hollowpoints for pretty much the same price as the regular ball full metal jackets. Pay an extra $1 per 500 for the Hollow points and you get a free ammo can.

Is there anything wrong with using hollow points as your range ammo?

nope.. shoot whatever you can afford. Generally Hollow points are thought to be more accurate. It has to do with the way a bullet is stabilized and has more of the material away from the center of the axis.. Lots of people use HP's for practice.

Damn it.... im an idiot then. I bought a bunch of the regular ammo and then thought hmmm... I might have been able to just purchase the hollowpoints instead, then I'd have HD ammo and range ammo all in one with added bonus of a couple ammo cans... Ahhh live and learn.

A lot of people like hollow points since the base of it is usually copper unlike fmj's which usually have an exposed lead base. The thought for this is that the hot powder gasses can create a higher lead level in the smoke due to it, I can't think of the word, basically make the lead melt and get into the air. I want to say oxidize but that term is incorrect. With hollow points the flame front of the powder is pushing on copper and not making the same thing happen.

Be aware that a lot of the indoor ranges don't allow hollow points.
Now, if you can get away from getting caught or not, that's another story.

some guns do not feed hp well. buy 1 box to try. if your kids eat it buy a case. also lighter bullet=more velocity/less recoil.

I've never heard of a range that wouldn't allow hollow-points; what would be the reason?

And as a former indoor range manager, I can tell you that we took a very dim view of patrons trying to sneak around the rules.

I didn't know there were indoor ranges that allowed hollow points. The reason is when somebody hits the hanger and the jacket comes back and starts somebody else on the line bleeding it becoms a sore spot.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

I've been shooting for 50+ years and haven't heard of any ranges that prohibit shooting hollowpoints. As far as the jacketting separating/flying back and striking another shooter....that can happen even with lead bullets!

Heh, I can... Has happened to me personally. (not my round...)

I still have a little bruise left over to prove it too...

Gunboat I don't have any written documentation but I've been hit and cut and used some super glue to fix a cut or two from a piece of jacket. I've had shooting mates hit along with shooters I didn't know but were on the line. Were they all hollow points most likely not just jacketed bullets.

Desert Dawg you are most definetly incorrect. It's impossible for a jacket to hit you from a lead bullet. Unless the bullet made a jacket during flight. A piece of lead can and does fly back at times and hit people or things.

The three Firing Lines prohibit HP along with Oaktree on their steel range. You'd have to have others talk about their experiences at their local range re HP ammo.

The worst case I saw it happen to was at a match in SLO and an old fart (god love em I hope to be moving that good at his age) he shot a popper and the jacket came back and logged in his fore head. A couple I used to shoot with were trained medical folks and fixed him up enough to go to the hospital. To his credit he finished the stage with blood running down his face and over his eyes, and a big stain on his shirt. He was shooting 38 super HP's.

Here is a thread in a completely different area talking about getting hit granted one of these sounds like a richochet but the other guy talks about getting hit with the jacket, not a richocet.
