    Brass sorting question

I'm thinking of getting started reloading, mostly 9mm for now. Question--when reloading range brass is there any reason to sort and reload by case manufacturer? E.g., all WIN, all Blazer, HRTRS, etc.

For exact performance shooting (bullseye, silhoutte) etc. maybe. For plinking, training, idpa type stuff, Nope not unless you want to.

I would separate out any 9mm cases with internal ledges. There are posts about it if you search. Basically they're Ammoload, IMT, or FM (Freedom Munitions) stamped. I've personally shot them new and reloaded them once before chucking them. I've not run into any issues myself, but there are reports of cases being separated at the ridge.

as stated some seperate for accuracy to have all components being exactly equal weight wise. I think the majority, myself included, do not seperate and just inspect for damage as im loading

Just be sure to check all the 9mm and get all that nasty stepped IMI or ammoland or whatever it is called out of the pile.

Not hard to spot, you will see what looks like an inner ledge- not to be confused by the cannelured shells...

I don't sort pistol brass, I'm a bit more picky when it comes to rifle brass.

Depending on what you use to deprime, you may want to sort out any that have a crimp on them.

A handheld deprimer might be too much work for them.

Something like lee's universal deprimer on a solid press will never have a problem.

And if you start to reload 45, you will want to sort the Large Pistol Primers from the Small Pistol Primers.

Brass inspection and sorting is a PITA with old eyes.

Thinking of trying this. Anyone use something similar?

For 9mm, or any other pistol cartage, I do not sort brass by headstamps. Now, for long range game, such as my 308 brass, yes I spend the time separating headstamps.

I do so for three reasons:

                    1. Satisfies my OCD.
                    2. 45 ACP comes in both small and large primer.
                    3. Primers tend to seat differently in different manufacturers cases; if I sort them by manufacturer, then the primers should all feel the same going in. If one doesn't, then I can find the problem fairly early in the process.

Really, (1) is enough for me, but the first time you try to seat a large primer into a Blazer Brass case will give you an appreciation for (2) and (3).

I even go as far as to separate further . . . if you pickup Winchester .45 auto brass, you will eventually notice that there are two different types with the same headstamp. The problem is with the headstamp bunter that has a bold font or "fatter" letters. I have found those to have tighter primer pockets and give me problems seating primers. Therefore I usually only reload .45 auto with Winchester and the headstamps that are a very skinny font.

I know it sounds stupid but I process a huge load of brass and have seen the difference.
