is pistol and rifle primer interchangeable ?

I ordered some cheap primers from Cabela's.

order 1/2 small pistol and some small rifle. they came in today. Cabelas sent me mostly small pistol. I called their customer support. checked with a supervisor, they claim they are interchangeable.....part number is even the same for both.

on the box, it also say primer for pistol and rifle.

are they just BS'ing or is that true ? any issue I might run into ?

    thanks

Higher pressures in rifle cartridges usually mean a thicker primer cup compared to the pistol.

Shows different product codes on S&B webpage....

I've never seen that (which doesn't mean its wrong). Size wise, they are the same, but I understood that at least among some manufacturers the construction is different (harder cup, hotter compound for rifle). You are igniting more powder for a rifle than a pistol. Perhaps you could email S&B and ask them.

another problem (you can see on both boxes, picture I posted) is the box clearly said for "rifle, pistol and revolver"........ so Cabela's is sticking to that.

if you add it to cart, you will also see they are the exact same part number.

If they are anything like tula or wolf they do not recommend their rifle primers for 223 rounds. They make what they call the magnum primers for the high pressure rifle rounds, they are the same power but harder/thicker cup. I think this a question to pose to S&B and not Cabelas. The manufacturer would have the best answer for you

The picture is just a stock photo ,go with part # as your best choice.

Not sure about the black box primer, but the green, 4,4 SR is small rifle. Pistol is marked 4,4 SP if its the green box.
I bought some at a gun show and was also confused with the box labeling. Checked the S&B website and got my answers.

I haven't seen primers labelled like that before but, I like it.

Size wise they are interchangeable. I run SRP in 9mm from time to time BUT, typically the primers that are designated as being SR WILL BE HARDER and they could give your pansy Beretta a challenge to set them off. All of mine fired with no issues though so maybe my hammer speed is all good.

I once had the notion that it would be good to just stock up on SRP for ALL of my SP needs, but then I started seeing SRP and .223 SRP and I was like- WTF? We back to this again? so now I do not mind keeping some SPP and SRP anymore. But if I had to use SRP in my SPP, then I would and have no issues.

They are dimensionally identical. Most manufacturers use different materials and compounds for rifle and pistol. Or at least they say they do.

But if S&B prints right on the box that they're for rifle, pistol, and revolver I would believe that they are all made the same at S&B. Probably one reason S&B primers aren't highly regarded performance wise.

Edit: I don't think you have anything to worry about safety wise.

                              I say interchangeable
reloading is like building tiny rocket ships. and testing how well they fly (or dont).
