Hey guys I'm looking to load up some 9mm for competition and I'm wondering where I should start. I'm currently loading 124gn rn at 4.6 gn of hodgdon cfe. The rounds will be shot through a g17 with 13 lbs recoil spring. What say you calguns?

147gr moly coated with 3.2 bullseye in xdm 5.25. Not sure on the pf. They also work in a 5" 1911 with lower recoil spring.Comment

Thanks guys. Do you have any recipes for 124 gr?the reason I ask is because I have a lot of 124 and want to use it up first. And also are you guys just guessing for fps to calculate pf?I don't have a chronograph so at best I'd be relying on a book. Thanks a lot!Comment

You'll want to buy or borrow a chronograph. Most clubs that run USPSA or similar matches have one available or maybe somebody will let you use theirs.
You'll also find that the exact bullet matters - are these plated? FMJ? I've seen not huge differences between, say plated and hi-tek coated but enough to adjust by .2 grains or so.Comment

I currently shoot 5 to 5.2gr of CFEPistol under a 124GR Berrys plated and it has manageable recoil in my Glock 17 and S&W M&P. I was shooting a reduced load with even less recoil but had some accuracy issues. I will trade accuracy over recoil anyday.Fear is the spare change that will keep you broke

4.0gr Titegroup
4.0gr WST
4.7gr BE-86
3.8gr N320
Not guessing, these will all make 1030-1050fps with RMR 124gr FN, loaded to 1.117" OAL from a 5" barrel over my chronoLast edited by 9mmepiphany; 04-12-2016, 10:31 PM....because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment

If you want to shoot competitions like USPSA I would recommend a Chrono. I have seen a 50 fps different between the same type of guns.
I notice a lot of people were more than happy to spew out their load, but they forgot one crucial thing, what OAL are they using? Are they loading at 1.100 or 1.135? That could make a huge difference. If your going to give a load without a OAL don't, just stop.
My favorite 9mm load for a 124gr bullet in my M&P Pro is 4.0gr N320 @1.125in, WinSPP, and a Bayou 124gr RN which makes a PF of 129-132. Using a Montana Gold HP I nees to up the powder to 4.2gr all other being equal.
My CZ SP -01 load uses a 135gr Bayou Bullet 3.7 gr N320 @ 1.120in, FedSPP make 128-130 PF. Using 147gr Bayou Bullets 3.3gr N320 everything else the same also gives me the same PF. Don't like the feel of the 147gr though. If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.Comment

My actual load for my 3-gun (no PF) is:
5.2 grains of CFE Pistol
Berrys #10299 Target Hollowpoint 124gr
Mixed brass
Winchester SPP
OAL 1.094
5.1gr CFE Pistol
Berrys #15144 HBFP 124GR
Mixed brass
Winchester SPP
OAL 1.10
Both loads give an avg of 1060fps from my G17 and M&P. Have no chronoed them from the XDM or anything else, although they function everything even the picky 2011 just fine. Recoil is not an issue. This load gives the best accuracy in the Glock, have not tested it in the M&P or 1011 but expect similar.
I stopped using a lot of the more popular powders and switched to CFe Pistol based mostly on how well it meters but also the availability and cleanliness of the powder. While I dont care much about the copper removal qualities I for sure like that it burns cleaner and my gun is not black after a session like it is with 700X and similar.Fear is the spare change that will keep you broke
