    Bullet Puller Problem...

I haven't loaded anything in a long time, but wanted to check out some custom loaded 338RUM to maybe see what's inside. I'm running into a problem. On the inertia bullet puller, I bought a Lyman with the two collets that is supposed to handle every cal known to God. It won't work with the 338RUM ammo. I load the shell into the hammer head with the large collet, just like shown on the package, and when I hit the head the brass flys off into never-never land. Didn't they used to make one that you put the round inside the head using a numbered shell holder ?? Or am I hallucinating again.... Anyway the damn thing doesn't work, or I don't know what the 'H' I'm doing.... Any advice. I looked at a pic of the RCBS and it looked just like the Lyman...

A pic would help. I use a Berry's inertia occasionally and it works ok, just more work than I would prefer. I got an RCBS Collet die that fits in a press, it's much easier to use but if you're not careful will leave marks.

Most all of the inertia type pullers work in a similar fashion, but if your brass is flying off into never never land, maybe it's missing the screw cap that holds the shell/collet into place. I use collet as a loose term, it's more like some aluminum pieces held together with an elastic band which the case fits inside of and is held by the head.

Maybe if you could post pics of your inertal hammer it would help. Sounds like you're missing something.

If your collet locks to the rim you are good, sometimes you might need a rubber band to keep it locked, but also, I have never seen any issues with brass flying out with my frankford arsenal. Are you using it right?

I put in the shell, put on the top and tighten it in and usually one or two hits and I am done...

OK, thanks for the support, but I was right. I didn't know what the 'H' I was doing.... A pure case of operator error.

Use a lee hand primer shell holder as the collet, works just fine.

You can use a regular shell holder too. There is theoretically risk that the hole is not big enough and could impact the primer. That's what "they" say. I'm not convinced. but still a risk.

The lee primer shell holders have a larger center hole, less risk.

That works like a champ, much faster, and they don't wear out like the impact collets.
