1st attempt: DIY plastic tip bullets

For the 2 people left in this world who swage there own .224 bullets, I found a quick way to add a plastic tip to what would otherwise be a 55gn open tip bullet. I ordered a bunch of ski plugs (the ones I used were from slide wright, but they all seem to look the same). Swaged normally, but when it comes time to close the tip on the jacket, I close it just enough to friction fit the tip into the core and then close the tip up just enough to squish the plastic into place.

The end result is attached. One pic is of four bullets with plugs various colors (didn't use green tips - I heard those were armor piercing), 2nd is the now 56.5 grain bullet next to a 55 grain open tip bullet with a j4 jacket and a 62 grain bullet with an aguila .22LR casing for a jacket. 3rd pic shows the pile of remaining ski plugs.

The open tip bullets are tack drivers - one hole at 100 yards out of a 24inch bull barrel. I'm not sure what effect adding a stubby plastic tip will have on ballistics, but I'll let you all know the end result

The hollow points look more aerodynamic than the plastic tips.

You're probably right - I have a die for softpoint bullets that should taper out the plastic tips as well. But first things first I'm going to put a few of them down range as is and see what happens.

I would love to hear how these things fly down range. I'm getting ready to swage some .223 bullet jackets from old 22lr brass.
