    Hornady LNL AP problems

My older press is not reliably ejecting loaded rounds. Could it be the retaining spring? Also should I be able to spin the shell plate without operating the handle?

Yes, you can spin the shell plate without cycling the handle. Its on a ratchet.

Do you have the EZJect system or the system with the wire on top. The EZJect system is a bit nicer and I have no problems with it. You can update your existing press for not to much money. Shell plates need a groove machined on the bottom side if they don't already have them. Hornady will cut the groove for a nominal charge.

Using the wire, I had some problems with ejection, but fiddling with the wire and polishing it generally solved that. I had one wire specifically for 9mm that I kept fiddling with until I got it working good.

It should not spin freely, check the drive tab that drives the shell plate. I saw a post where someone's sheared off.
Polish the side of the ejected nub for smoother ejection.

Mine does not have the wire. Instead of ejecting the round when it strikes the ejection stub it stays on the retention spring and goes around the ejector stub. Then it continues back in the cycle.

make sure that your shell plate nut hasn't backed out - use a lock washer.

you also may have rounded off that little stub that sticks up, I have found that if I go too fast I can get mine to jam up pretty consistently whereas if I slow down slightly the problem seems to disappear

Thanks, I'll buy the appropriate size lock washer.

had the exact same problem, the little raised knub that actually touches the brass and kicks it out had rounded at the top so the brass would either get hung up or run over the knub.
I took a flat file and gave it a couple swipes to bring back the sharp edge and my problem went away 100%

Not entirely sure if this could cause the round to not eject, but make sure that the retaining spring has been guided into it's little grove to drop down on the last stage?... I know it can stay up, as I forget now and again to do so, but don't know what happens if you run it like that (or does it only drop down for loading a case?)

I have seen that this is an issue for new owners or folks that replace the carriers and do not put them back together properly. It is a simple mistake to make.

I only opened this thread up to say what you just said. There is a you-tube video that shows how to fix it so that it works properly.

This aint it, but it can be the cause and it shows how to fix.
