I have several Mitutoyo digital calipers as well as several Mitutoyo dial calipers (I'm a semi retired Machinist/Tool and Die Maker) I use both, but I can tell you that dial calipers have and advantage when "sneaking" up on a size. Kind of like an analog clock, you can look at your digital clock and it reads 3:47 and do a little math and know it's 13 minutes to 4:00, or just glance at an analog clock and know it's 13 minutes to 4:00.

You can set digital calipers to the size you want and set a zero point (and that can work just fine) but you aren't actually reading a size when you do that, just a variation from a set point.

Dial calipers are prone to getting a powder flake between the rack gear and pinion gear and throwing the measurement off by .025, you can turn the dial 90* or make a simple little tool to skip the hand back to where it belongs.

The point is they both have advantages....I would stay away from any of the plastic ones, and would say in my experience the digitals may be a little more robust, but if you aren't driving nails with them either should be fine.

HF digital has been working fine for reloading and home repair stuff.

In another thread, I think somebody commented that the cheap ones eat batteries faster than the Mitoyu do. I don't have the comparison myself, but the HF one seems to use batteries quickly, even when not used often.

I can tell you that if I ever do any real machining, I will not rely on a cheapie.

He said more than 10.00 and less than 300.00 was looking for something in the middle of the road. I found my Mitutoyos on amazon for 147.00 and the 6" version for 104.00 I'd say that's middle of the road.
As far as battery life I've accidently left mine on for I think a couple three months and no issues. I might replace batteries every 1.5-2 years.

As a heavy equipment mechanic I tried many brands of digital calipers from HF to Matco, SnapOn ect. I never found one that was very accurate. It also never failed that when I was on a remote mine site somewhere is when the batteries would go out and I'd be searching some desolate town looking for those damn batteries. I picked up a couple central precision dial calipers and have enjoyed the simplicity.

Those could work for measuring if I am using my RCBS press. But Not for my Redding, and Dillon press.

FWIW, this is what I use: Mitutoyo 6" for $146.22 shipped at Amazon. Water, coolant, oil, and dust resistant, too:

You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
                            Come on...what harm??

                            joefrank64k 251/251 100% iTrader?
