Your explanation provides the missing clue that you had a .45 gun out at the range as well. I just can't see any other way the cartridge would have been contained like that without a kaboom. I'm glad you're ok!

Kaboom! - Almost ?

Because it was obvious that did not come out of a 40s&w. It's pretty physically impossible for that to happen.Thank you all for your comments. After much mental deliberation I'm going to have to accept Scobun's theory.
I've seen and read about the Glock kabooms so I took extra care to load light and not over-seat the bullets. I installed a light on my press and went very slow on the loading process for the initial 40 loading. I visually verified every round, so I know this wasn't a double charge.
In 25 years of shooting, this was my first time to the range with both .40 and .45ACP at the same time. It is entirely possible that I did have .45 and 40 rounds exposed at the same time. I did take RNFP for both calibers so they would have looked almost identical.
I did have my son with me (he's 22) and he was loading magazines too. (He does not own any guns and is not a regular shooter) I take the blame for not supervising his mag loading. My learning mistake on similar sized ammo on the same table.
The curve on the cracked brass does match the unsupported ramp area of the barrel of my Kimber Gold Match II barrel.
Lessons learned for me:
1. No more .45 and 40SW out at the same time.
2. I got lucky that the 40 somehow headspaced or was held in place by the extractor and gun contained the high pressure.
Nobody mentioned the way off center firing pin strike on the primer. Nobody said.. "Hey that's no Glock firing pin strike" After some research and verification, the Glock firing pins leave a rectangular indent and not a round one like shown in the photo I provided.
Lessons learned and glad I've got all 8 fingers and 2 thumbs. Hope this helps someone else that may have .45 and .40 out at the same time.
Thanks all.

People told you what it was and you didn't want to believe it. How else does a case expand like that unless something is seriously messed up with your gun? If it was out of battery, it would have the bulge on the opposite end of the case, you know, the part that would be out of battery.Comment

And the expansion was too "perfect" to have been a firing completely out of battery... the casing certainly did appear to be in "a" chamber when it fired.People told you what it was and you didn't want to believe it. Partially out of battery? I'd expect expansion of the portion not chambered, but not that evenly all the way up to the neck.- Rich

I had a guy training a class next to me taking two lanes. They where shooting 9mm and .40s&w
After the six of them finished up and RO was busy, I pulled there brass over to my pile.
When I got home and ran the brass through the separators. I found two of those, but they didn't split.
I was dumbfounded that a class instructor would train with two different caliber that close at the same time.
Those fools didn't even know.Comment

Oh really????
There were quite a few different theories. Let's recap the posts:
cwilliams - is that a 40 case?
Zabmle - looks like 9mm
Cokebottle - 9mm slipped in the batch
cwilliams - 9 through .40 and .40 through a .45
scobun - .40 in a .45
Orangeusa - bigger than .45
stilly - .40 resized to 9mm
stilly - doubled up on the .40 resized to 9mm theory
bsumoba - wrong caliber chambered
romukom - wrong caliber stamped on the brass
mhmagee67 - fired out of battery
opos - 9mm marked as .40
f4tweet - out of battery
pdq_wizard - 40 in the .45
Eurphoria - glock hater
Eurphoria - still hates glocks
cwilliams - out of battery confirmation, yet still goes with the evidence of .40 in the .45
ar15barrels .40 in the .45
I did consider each post and knew the 9mm theories were incorrect. Having read and theorized on my own about all the Glock kaboom hype I was pre-dispositioned to think that somehow the Glock was involved. It was .. it was at the range too. It wasn't until the .40 in the .45 theory came along, that I realized that I couldn't trust my memory and needed to believe the evidence in front of me.Comment

The theory was correct... round loaded into a larger caliber chamber.
The details were incorrect, in that it was not a 9 fired from a 40, but rather a 40 fired from a 45.
We didn't know that you had a 45 at the range... same as we don't know whether or not you reload and shoot 9
That's why I asked for a comparative shot with other cases. From the first picture, for all I could tell it was a .32 fired from a 9.
Either way, it's all good. You determined the issue and will take steps to make sure it doesn't repeat.- Rich

Regardless of the theories it helped you remember what might have happened and what to look out for in the future. That for me is enough of a reminder to pay attention to what is going in your gun. Thanks for the good thread that got us all thinking.Comment

I challenge your assumption that I mentioned "wrong caliber chambered"
Here was my post...
"I had a similarly looking case when I put a 9mm in a 10mm glock 20 by accident.
Found the case and it looked exactly like the picture.
It is easy when you are switching back and forth from different guns on the table to take a smaller caliber and put it into a larger caliber pistol.
I cannot imagine with the case support in the barrel, that a 40 cal round will do this in a 40 cal barrel."
So I mentioned switching back and forth from a small caliber pistol to a large one, which is how my 9mm in a 10mm round occurred. Yours just happened to be a 40 into a 45.
That's all....lol.
And yes, we all missed the classic glock firing pin strike on the primer...

All in all, I try to learn the most from other people's mistakes. Sometimes I get first hand experience too. Hope we all can learn something.Comment

I think chiming in late on this one is way safer.
I had a buddy shoot a .40 through a 1911 in .45
Sounded funny and extractor didn't quite pull the old shell.
Mine didn't split either so all the gas went down range along with a bouncing 180 gr. JFN at about 50 feet per second.
Barrel was fine. Friend, not so much.Comment
