A friend at work put me on to a local Ammunition manufacturer who was willing to assemble pistol ammo for me. I supply Bullets, Primers, Power, and Brass.

I just dropped off my first order today. He is charging $50 to load 1000 rounds.

This is the first time I've ever tried this. Can anyone tell me if this is a common practice?

Personally I would be a little nervous shooting someone else's reloads. However I don't know this shop nor am I saying anything negative about their work, just a personal feeling of not having done it myself makes me worry a little.

So, it will cost you an extra $0.05 per round. A basic Dillon setup for RL 550B in a single caliber will run you $650 or so. Break even point is about 13,000 rounds with the exception that if you were to quit reloading you would get 90% of the purchase price back as Dillons don't lose much value.

Common? Not really.

You would be wise to find out more about this operation , such as, is he licensed , carry insurance, etc.

People normally just buy commercial reloads. They are probably less per thousand than doing it your way.

One advantage your way has, you can take back all the duds to Joe The Reloader, because you know who he is.

Hmmm, He is using a Dillon 650 and making 2k rds per hour. $50 to use your components...

Not a bad price though, well, I dunno what you paid for your components.

I got brass, primer, and powder charge for about two cents per. Then my choice of bullet. I don't begrudge him his labor costs.

That does not seem possible when you consider that a single primer cost about .03 at $150 per 5,000. .027 for about 10 grains of powder, using 8 pounders. That's close to .06 apiece....add brass on top of that....am I missing something?

Actually, based on my loads for .45ACP, primer is $0.036 ($181/5000), powder $0.11 ($150/8lbs) and if you buy range brass and use it at least 3 times, that is about $0.02 per so it would come out to be correct.

I meant $0.011 for powder, not $0.11 sorry. I also was looking at the wrong powder, and in reality it is $0.013. So, for powder and primer together it comes out to $0.049. I just bought 5,200 tumbled range brass today for $200, without amortizing it comes to $0.038 per. If amortized, the numbers add up.
