I tried this on another forum with no luck. Lets see what my Calguns brethren have to say.

So I bought a box of Bear Creek Supply 400gr 45-70 moly bullets the other day, sort of spur of the moment for my new 1895g.
Is it true that once you go moly you never go back - as in, the barrel is now coated with non-removable black stuff?
For what it's worth, the guy at the store said they don't leave any residue.
I don't want to limit myself to moly bullets forever, so do I now have a 15lb paper weight?

No. Their literature states that the moly doesn't come off of bullet, but that your barrel will discolor. Sounds like double-speak to me. I'm interested in actual experience as opposed to talking to someone defending their product.

That is double speak. If the ID of the barrel is changing color, there's moly coming off inside. Is it a problem? Not at all.

Molybdenum disulphide is a dry lubricant that can handle extremely high temperatures and extremely high pressures. Just what you need if you're going to lube a bullet. Those properties are also what makes moly so good in 10's of thousands of other applications. And since a bullet is an interference fit through the barrel, there most certainly will be transfer of moly to the barrel. No biggee.

Moly particles are so small that they work their way into the micro pores of surfaces they are put on/burnished into. And generally speaking once it's there, it's there forever. The only way to really remove it is chemically because mechanical means, like running patches through the barrel or wiping a surface, will only remove the stuff that's loose on the surface and won't get them out of the micro pores. But there's no need to. If there is enough moly on a surface, you can remove it (and therefore discolor what you're using to remove it) but only to a point. Eventually, you'll get to the point where mechanical removal, like using patches or a rag, will have removed all it can and discoloration of your patches/rags will fade. But there will still be moly in the barrel and other surfaces.

I've treated the barrels and slides/actions of all my guns with either molybdenum disulphide or tungsten disulphide. (Tungsten disulphide is actually a little superior to molybdenum disulphide but due to it's cost when they were both developed, the moly version is the one that gained the most popularity.) I use a paste of the moly or tungsten disulphide and slather it on bolts, slides, actions, or on a patch down the barrel. I even have tungsten disulphide in spray form that I can simply spray down the barrel. I'll then work the actions/bolts to burnish the material into the surfaces of the metal, then I'll clean it all up and then oil/lube per normal. For the barrel, I'll follow up with some patches soaked in the moly or tungsten up and down the barrel a few times, then I clean per normal.
