    rock chucker mount question

Hey guys, got myself a rock chucker kit for Christmas and not having much money left over, mounted it to a cheaper bench I already had that I reinforced some. I'll be using it for 308, but have never reloaded yet. My question is, with the press mounted if I push all the way down and apply a decent amount of weight, the press ever so slightly bends towards me. I guess the best way to figure out is to try, but will this mess with the process much? Thanks

Not that I can think of. The press is not bending....How much does it bend?

For some alternative mounting options in case the edge of the bench is not strong enough -

The flexing of the bench will not effect the load. The issue you have would be breaking the bench at some point, but that could be 10000 rounds later depending on the setup.

The bench is like .6 or .7 fiber board, then I put a 3/4 inch plywood board on top of that side and bolted that down then bolted the press to both. I'm thinking it'll last a while if the flex is okay.

            Thanks for the help guys.

Make sure to use case lube or the problem will be magnified. I now from personal experience.

+1 on this, as well as case lube, especially for 308...I've got the quick change mount to switch between my RCBS and my Hornady AP....works like a charm, and both presses are rock solid.

I'd put a large piece of wood UNDER the top of the bench, much stronger that way.

If you can find some 1 1/2 angle iron. I would cut it as long as you can. Or just add a 2x4. Now that you mentioned it , its going to bother you.

I would find a way to give additional support for the press or maybe get a strong mount for it from inlinefab, but since it is NOT the Loadmaster then I doubt that flex will really cause you any issues. You are prolly good, but flex still sucks and if you can reinforce or brace underneath that spot you should. Ever flex a paperclip back and forth?

They are the exact same thing, except a paper clip is metal, thinner, weaker, smaller, completely different and cheap.

Flexing only would affect your COAL if you are not consistent and depending on the flex per pull, it could make you slightly inconsistent in your COAL/crimping/seating. I think that is the worst that could happen and even that number would be small I am willing to bet. But the fact that it is there and is known about kinda sucks.

Get some wood glue and put it on the bottom.

                            I use a 1 inch top that overhangs a 6X12 about 6 inches.
I didn't like the flex of the 1 inch so I added a piece of 1.5 inch under the 1 inch but most importantly I added a 2x6 beneath that and have no flex at all now.
The two top boards are glued and bolted together but I load 50BMG on the bench so it would have most likely snapped.
By running the 2X6 up and down all of the top except the last 1/2 inch is supported all the way.
Your top will flex in both directions not just down and this method solves that.
A steel gusset will work as well.
