    What is this?!

I've been shooting and reloading for 40 years, and have to admit that I've never seen one of these. Picked it up at an outdoor range while picking up my own .45 brass. It is clearly a Speer .45 brass case, but it has been necked down to .40 inside neck diameter (at least that's what it measures after firing). Might this be a .38/.45 Clerke? I'm sure someone out there can tell me what it is. Thanks.

You most likely answered your own question with the Clerke option.

Back in the day many custom barrel makers chambered 1911 barrels for them. Many others also played with such wildcats but the Clerke caught on, for a while anyway.

Inside neck diameter measures .40, though the case has been fired.

            40 Super has similar appearance.
            Could be something else.

.400 Corbon. .40 Super uses a special case. Corbon cases are lower pressure, and can be made from ACP brass instead of super brass.

Based on looking up the case dimensions of the 4 suggested rounds, it looks to be .400 Corbon. The overall case length is .895" with an inside neck diamenter of .40". .400 Corbon is .900" and .40". 38/45 Clerke is .890" and .356". .40 Super is .988" and .40". .357 Sig is .865" and .356". Thanks for all of the help!!

^^ That is exactly what it is. Same as necking down a 40 S&W case down to 9mm. In this case You neck down 45 ACP case down to accept 40 cal. bullets.

Sarco sells .400 Corbon barrels for 1911s for $60. No clue on the quality, but people have used Sarco barrels with success.

                          GTFO!

I have a 7" 1911 SARCO barrel that I used to get my Taurus 1911-ALR into the commie state.

They are still around making barrels? That is SWEET! Thanks for the link.

No problem! If you do get one, I would love a review. I have been on the fence about getting one for my Kimber.
