Hey what is the range on Bullseye?
As in the distance you can shoot a 165 with it? Hell, I've hit a point target at 550 yards with a small volley of bullets.

I was looking at it tonight and I was loading it up in some .38 spl with I think 158gr TL SWC and it gave me a range of "3.5 starting and 3.6 MAX DO NOT LOAD MORE OR YOU WILL DIE!"

Yes, the BoLee actually said that in the load column, I was like, Wow, WTF?

I also recall some guy telling us in the NRA reloading class that he did not like Bullseye because of how it was not forgiving and if you loaded more then kaboom...

SO until tonight the bottle stayed unopened, but tonight I cracked it open and made some more test rounds...
People tend to freak out about giving reloading data because yeah, you could hurt or kill yourself. Bullseye isn't in the books for heavy bullets because its likely not ideal. That doesn't make it wrong or unsafe. I can put 12 or so grains of it in one of my 45-70 cases with a 350 grain bullet and have a great economical cartridge for punching paper of banging steel.

I started low at 2.0 gains of bullseye. 600FPS, did not cycle.

Worked my way up to 4.5 grains in 0.5grain intervals. Things were a bit hot at 4-4.5 but still nothing to worry about.

What COAL are you using that works for your G34? Will you post some pics?

      Hey J_BEEM

It looks like you have good success with 165 grainers. If my original post was too long, let me summarize for you: It seems like a few of us have a high failure rate with seating these suckers. Did this happen to you too?

I'm guessing it's mixed brass, and how some brass may have thicker walls. This gums up the bullet during seating, thus resulting in bullet getting flattened and fatter, and also causing it not to chamber.

You're using the same OAL I was for these rounds.

Any secret loading tips would be great, but even with pro tips , I probably will not stick with 165 gr after I use up the rest of my batch.

I have only loaded 9mm with mixed brass. I have dealt with such issues and I believe the root of them is the varied length.

Two things you need to try.

1-Make sure you are expanding the case mouth enough. Too much and well... throw it in the scrap pile.

2-Dial your crimp back as far as you can. You really only need just enough to remove your expansion flare. (and your using a taper crimp NOT a roll crimp right?)

          Good suggestions.

On the first, it's possible I don't have enough flare. I give enough just to "sneak" a bullet through so I can extend my case life, but then again, it's just 9mm, and I always have plenty of pickup of these at the range.

On the second, yup I'm using a taper crimp Lee die. I had thought I was already only using a light crimp per Lee's directions, but I can always readjust the die to be sure.

          Thanks.

Worrying about 9mm case life is definitely a losing proposition. Expand as much as necessary, crimp it back down enough to remove the bell and no further, call it a day.

              .

I apologize. When I typed RANGE, I meant the range of powder charges. But you answered it so that is good to know. Maybe OP can figure out some stuff now and be more successful.

So when in doubt you can start it out pretty low. That is good to know. I wonder why BoLee only has a 3.5-3.6 range...

Thanks for the info. This is all golden and a good place to start developing more from.

Pdoggeth: You should NEVER have to worry about 9mm brass. nobody should. DON'T worry about it. Your life will be smoother. (and if you ARE still worrying about it because you have none, PM me...)

                OP,

I've been using Bear Creek 170's in 9mm for a few years now. With the CZ I found that the chamber is cut short. I had the local gun surgeon re-cut the chamber so longer loaded rounds would pass the "plunk" test. I've never had a problem once the CZ chamber was re-cut. My Glocks work fine as the chamber seems bigger.

The 9mm rounds for the CZ are loaded to 1.130 with the 170's. They pass the "plunk" test just fine. I've used Tightgroup, VV N310, Universal Clays, and now experimenting with WSF. The Enos forum has 3 pages of information just on the 165's. I'm also trying them out as Bear Creek has stopped making 170's for now (they are too busy with 147's in 9mm and 200's in 40). I've won a few GSSF matches with the 170's so they are plenty accurate for GSSF and USPSA matches.

I just use assorted brass to load. I'm too lazy to separate them by manufacturer. I also use W-W small pistol primers.

Try having the CZ chamber re-cut. It won't hurt anything. Cost is minimal too. If you use a case gauge be careful. Some case gauges have generous tolerances. I like to use the barrel of the gun I'm loading for to check my rounds.

Plated 165s in a 9mm....If these rounds work in a stock Glock 34 I suppose it is a tribute to Glock.

Making a match load or pet load for particular pistol is half the fun of reloading & competition.

So if solving the plated 165 9mms issues calls for installing a non standard after market barrel that requires refitting as well as re cutting the chamber in this barrel...great.

I installed a off brand .45 Automag barrel in my .380 Bersa pistol, cut away a little on the frame, downloaded the ammunition, cut most of the front body of the magazine, and the gun shot fantastically.

                      Hey Mr. Stilly...

                      I'd sure like to, but...

I sold it to a guy who liked to jump multiple motor vehicles and flaming hoops of fire on a motorcycle in front of large crowds. One day I heard he unsuccessfully tried to jump some sort of rather large body of water with a heavy current.

Word has it the guy was CCWing the piece in question at the time of the jump. The extra weight must have been part of the blame or cause of his ill fated attempt. Unfortunately he, his motorcycle, and my...his...pistol must have grinded their way down to the Gulf by now making the chances of recovery not so likely.

Did I fail to mention I have some beach front property for sale in Idaho?

Not sure if this is any help, but here it goes. I use a G22 lone wolf conversion. and i had a bunch of problems with my 165s cycling. i used 2.8-3.4 grains of titegroup. I didn't get cycling till i hit 3.2 and at 3.4 i had over pressure signs. 3.2 has been my reliable powder charge. The coal I've been using has been 1.160. and i figured that if you give the case a little more a flare before seating helps, and obviously use a factory crimp die. I'm using Lee dies. hope it helps! don't give up!

I love the 165gr Xtreme bullets in my G17. Shoots very well. Even out to 150 yards. A few keyholed the target at 150 yards shot from my Ruger P-89.

I loaded a hundred rounds with BE-86. Mixed brass. No problems with plunk test, Dillon gage and G17 barrel.

OAL was 1.140 starting with 3.9gr of BE-86 powder.

Every 20 rounds I stepped up .1 grains of powder. I finished with 4.3gr of BE-86. Very nice loads. I like the accuracy at 4.3gr loads.

                            Velocity was about 750fps.

Here is my Ruger P-89 pistol that I was shooting these with out to 150 yards.

                              ImageUploadedByTapatalk1456818912.781867.jpg

I also use a Glock G17 out to about 50 yards with stock sights. I have ordered over a 1K of these 165gr bullets so far. My other favorite is the Xtreme 100gr 380 cal bullet to shoot out if my 9mm. It is a screamer. The 100gr are very cheap to shoot.

At 150 yards the 165gr bullet dropped almost 8 feet.

Had another great day of shooting in the desert (Hodge Rd, Barstow CA).

My friend brought his new laser range finder, I brought my new chrono.

                                Distance to target...174 yards.

                                Shot # - FPS - PF

                                1 - 774 - 127.71

                                2 - 740 - 122.10

                                3 - 789 - 130.18

                                4 - 869 - 143.38

                                5 - 840 - 138.60

                                6 - 890 - 146.85

I even hit the target with my G-17 with open sights. 2 times dead ringer out of 10 shots. All other 8 shots within 2 feet of the target at 174 yards with stock Glock sights. Not to bad. Time to upgrade to some tighter sights. Too much room for error. Anyone have suggestions?

At 174 yards this bullet (165gr) seemed to stabilize better then the 100 grain ones. 100 grain ones from Glock 17 was like throwing gravel. All over the place. Within 15 foot radius of the target.

We did have the range set up today out to 465 yards with the laser range finder. We just ran out of room. Darn mountain wasn't tall enough. Yes we were shooting up hill at 5% angle according to the laser range finder.

Today's target was a 2 foot tall 3 foot wide piece of aluminum. You could hear it ring out nicely.
