    Aguila Colibri 22LR question

So I read that this powderless ammunition is actually not that loud when shot out of a rifle. Has anyone tried it to verify just how much noise it makes?

Likewise, does anyone know of any other manufacturers of powderless 22LR, or any ammunition similar to it? It seems like the sources of Colibri are drying up.

The colibri that I have heard sounded like a break barrel pellet gun.

I bought a few boxes from a shop that has recently gone out of business. Haven't seen them for sale locally anywhere else.

Standard colibri is virtually silent out of my 22" marlin XT22. Like dry fire quiet. Super colibri is only slightly louder, still quieter than a pellet gun.

I have a strong opinion that a standard colibri will pass through a squirrel through and through.

CCI 22 CB Long and CCI quiet 22 are also good options. I buy them whenever I find them locally. I generally pay about $12/100 for longs, about $4-5/50 for quiet22. These options are definitely louder than colibris in a rifle, but are about as close as we can get to a suppressor in CA

I use Super-Colibri in a 6" 2206 and it's about the same as my old 1000 fps Gamo airgun. I've been afraid to try it in the 10-22 or Marlin 600 for squibbing. Stupid Gamo's pretty loud too. It's a pre-suppressed version.
Other than the massive popularity of the 9mm Parabellum round, the metric system never really caught on here...

I've shot the Super version out of a 26" barrel and it did not get stuck in barrel.......quiet yes, but a hell of a drop in the bullet too.

I shoot them out of 22 rifles. Marlin 60 and 10/22. On the 10/22 it won't cycle the action, but it's fun.
There are some great youtube videos that actually measure the decibels.

Also my experience is with the super colibri

They are quite loud out of a 2" Taurus .22 semi auto pistol...

Out of a rifle though they are quite silent.

I am probably an expert in this field.

Back around 1996 I started playing with silencers and making my own. I found it hard to get a good silent shot but after doing research I discovered that there are THREE sounds made durring a gun shot. 1. The action. 2. The blast of gas. 3. The sonic crack of the round breaking and slowing down after going supersonic.

You can fix number 1 by using a gun with less moving parts, like a Bolt Action.
You can fix number 2 by making a container that collects the gas and allowing it to only exit the muzzle.
You can ELIMINATE number 3 by keeping your rounds below 1100 FPS, or, by having subsonic ammo.

My favorite gun was a Remington 581-S Bolt Action .22lr and I was able to slide a PVC pipe over the end and lock it in very easily by twisting it.

                That was my testing platform.

Then When I was going to the store one day at Turners I noticed they had .22 CB SHORT by Winchester.

I tried some and I was HOOKED on .22 CB (CB stands for CAT BULLET because they are quiet enough to take down a cat... ) Well they do for me anyways.

So I was enjoying the light snaps and shooting my suppressed .22lr in the back yard all day long.

Then the great RAID of 2000 happened and the POPO told me that it was not right to play with silencers; actually, RPD said nothing, they had a prosecutor, DA and a judge tell me that.

So there I was later on with all them rounds and I picked up a Henry's .22lr lever action and I found that it held 17 shots so now I could fire my gun in the backyard again without needing those illegal silencers. Nevermind that I was still in the middle of the city and discharging a firearm, well I do not think it is as bad as a home made silencer, but kinda shamed all the same.

So I started testing different rounds.

The Winchester XX WAS the quietest and I picked up box after box of those.
Then I found the Colibris and THOSE were even quieter.
They also have a hummingbird round that is in a yellow box and it is a tad louder, but has more power.

Remington C-BEE shorts suck. They are inconsistant, you are plinking away and then POW they snuck in a loud one...

CCI .22 Short CBs are consistant, but also louder then all the others. Why even call them CBs? Oh yeah, they are KINDA quiet.

Now they ahve a NEW CB out, well, it has been out for a few years, it is made by CCI and it is a 22LR CB adn THOSE ARE NICE. Nice in that they will fit and cycle (manually) in EVERY 22lr firearm and magazine. They are good, if you find them GET THEM. They perform very well out of the Henry's Golden Boy, Ruger 10/22, Remington 581, Ruger MK-II.

Now you wanna talk about stuff that might not bring the cops, then look to get a PCP. Revoman is probably talking about a Benjamin/ Crosman Marauder or M-ROD.

Those are VERY nice and they are the quietest air rifles you can get. I have one that shoots .18gr .22 pellets at 900 FPS. You can say it cloverleafs at 37 yards on a bad day. It is an awesome gun but you can not afford it. Only people like me can afford it because we do not care how much money we waste. Mine has been used to eliminate rats and cats and squirrels, Oh my.

I paid a bit over $900 for my M-ROD but it was all custom and decked out with extended baffles and shroud, extended AIR resovoir and painted stock. Tony did a good job on it. All polished internals too.

Then to fill it I used my HP 100 from my SCUES and I bought an adapter from pyramid aire. takes about 30 seconds to fill the thing, LOVE IT.

I shot a squirrel and blew his head up yesterday morning as he was doing his cute little spiderman impression for me, he had his nose wrinkled up and his tail was cocked and twitching back and forth and he was sitting on the front of a tree pointing downwards. HIS fault. He gave me an opportunity and I blew him off the tree.

I could not have done that with my .22 Colibri. Prolly not even their hummingbird ammo, but MAYBE with a Winchester XX CB short.

The Colibris are nice, they got that HUGE *** bullet on top, Or are those the little ones with the little pointy bullet on top? I forgot, but either way they fly the same.

I've shot Super Colibri through some rifles

Through a bolt action, the only sound you hear is the slap of the little pointy round on the target. Everything else is virtually silent.

They also have a trajectory like an M198 howitzer. You can't put enough elevation on your rear sight to shoot X's on an A17 target at 50ft.

It was an interesting experiment, but not one I'd do again. I shot up the rest of that ammo in a Ruger Single 6.

Yeah, but when you shoot a supersonic 1165 or 1200 fps bullet through a silenced bolt gun, there is a LOUD THWACK when it hits even a blue jay. I mean, from what I was told...

If instructions on box say do not shoot from rifle , or pistol only , Do not shoot from a rifle. I got a colibri stuck in my Savage heavy barrel and luckily noticed it doing a barrel check just before shooting standard 22's .I can't remember if it was supers or not. CCI quiets are the silent killers !Well , not silent , but air rifle like blast . They are a full 40 grains.I have found them to be the quietest and most accurate of the cb type ammo for rifles. Not as quiet as colibri's but I can't use those in my rifle anyhow. CB for cat bullet LMAO !!!

Now that I think of it I have shot them out of my Ruger MK-II and the 22/45 LITE.

                          They work great.

I THINK I might have shot them out of my Henry though, if you DO shoot them out of a rifle, certainly make sure it is a carbine. But I dunno for sure with the colibris, I KNOW I shot the hummingbird with my Henry's. Those are like 2-3gr of powder I think, they fly around 700 FPS and are fairly quiet.

Haha, indeed I asked because I was curious if it were possible to setup some silent personal range in the back yard (note to law enforcement, CURIOUS, not that I did it!). Where I live, discharging any round -- bullet, bb, pellet -- is strictly prohibited.

I guess it's possible to get it set up, though the neighbors still will hear the action of the gun and the drop of the hammer. Oh and the ping of the lead hitting some backstop. But probably quiet enough so they think it's only some noisy home project going on (ideally).

Then again, I could say "f*** it, let's rock". I have a neighbor who has a teen daughter that brings her bb gun out to shoot in front of her garage on some weekends, in plain sight of all the other neighbors. Hasn't gotten them in trouble (yet).

For as accurate as I've found Colibri to be in my Marlin Mountie, might as well target practice in your yard with a Red Ryder.

CCI CB Long was quite accurate and printed the same place as Fed bulk at 25 yards. It liked the Rem CBee short too, but those apear to be no longer made. I didn't have any CCI CB short to try.
