AR reloading help please. Powder/Primers ?

I am new to reloading and have some questions if anyone can help I would appreciate your advice.

I have a Dillon 650 and want to reload .223

I bought some Winchester primers (puple box) and read that they may not be a good idea to use.

I want to shoot 55 grain fmj and some 62 grain fmj.

Primers I have read that are good and wont bumpfire etc..

    CCI #41,400, BR4
Remington 7 1/2 benchrest small rifle primers

    Any experience with these????

    Powder - Hodge 335? , Varget, ????

Any suggestions on where to buy it in the Orange County area?

THanks for any help you can offer.

My buddy uses H335. I think 25 gr. with a 62 gr. bullet. 1 MOA @ 100 yards. I sent him this link. Hope he can give you more detailed information.

+1 with the H335 powder, I also use the BR4 primers.

      Accurate combo, bullet weight friendly.

                Don`t forget

BLC2,W-748 and TAC,all are suitable.for .223.On the other hand,if you are going to use the Dillon a Ball powder meters alot better.

Aw crud. I forgot about the winchester primers not being hard enough for the AR's. I picked up 1k this weekend at the show. They had such a good price on primers I bought small and large pistol and small rifle. I have CCI's for the AR ammo I have loaded so far.

What do you guys think? Is the Winchester problem with floating firing pins really an issue, or can I just load these up?

Do a search. This has been discussed several times. Just an old wives tale far as I'm concerned. I've shot several thousand with no problems at all.

Not an issue at all. Thousands of rounds with winchester primers through my ARs without a single primer related issue. If you don't want the WSRs, you can send them to me. Just picked up another 10k myself.

I've used Winchester primers without incident for quite some time. I wasn't aware there was a problem with 'em.

I've loaded a few thousand of these:

                          LC brass trimmed to 1.750
                          Hornady 55gr FMJBT w/cannelure
                          27.0gr 748
                          CCI 41 primers
                          2.215 COL (cannelure barely visible)
                          slight crimp
                          ~3100fps 20" 1:9

                          No problems yet

I had a few pierced primers with WSRs (69 grain Noslers + Ramshot TAC) but it was only when I was about 1 grain shy of the max recommended load.

I settled on a load that's near the low end of the min/max range and it's not happened since.

I have used the Winchester WSR primers in my Dillon XL 650 to reload my AR plinking rounds, and had no problems with them, but since becoming aware of the "conventional wisdom" of them being subject to slam fires in the AR, I have switched to CCI primers . . . and still have no problems! Lucky me!

Varget is not supposed to be a good powder for 55 gr. AR rounds. Personally I use AA 2520 (26 gr.) for my 55 gr. plinking rounds which is a ball powder and meters nicely in the Dillon XL 650. I save the Varget and Reloder 15 for my high power handloads with heavier bullets (77 and 80 gr. SMK BTHP).

I hear that IMR 4895 and H4895 are also good all-around powders for 55 gr. rounds for the AR, but have not tried them myself. I bought an 8lb. keg of AA2520 for loading rounds for my M1 Garand and discovered that it is a really good multi-caliber powder, and use it for all my non-match rifle rounds (.30-06, .308, 6.8 SPC, .30-30 and .223).

                              Hope that helps a little.
