Close call with commercial reloads

Today my friend and I were shooting a 1911 in 9mm when a round wouldn't chamber. Tried another round, still won't go into battery. (There was ~1/4" gap when the slide tried to close on a new cartridge.).

Turns out there was a bullet in the barrel. Guess that cartridge had no powder. Glad it prevented a round from chambering.

Moral: don't use 'no -name' reloads.

The real moral is you and your friend get educated on what a squib load is and the proper way to deal with it. Someone wasn't paying attention. A squib can happen with any ammunition.

What F762 said. Your gun "talks" to you every time you shoot. Learn to "listen".

What's disturbing is that the action cycled after a primer was popped.

If the empty case stayed in the chamber, then nothing would happen when the trigger was pulled. Also, there is a significant decrease in recoil when when no bullet leaves the barrel.

A lesson learned without a blown up pistol is a good day.

You get what you pay for, start reloading you'll produce better ammo and you wouldn't be able to blame anyone else except yourself.

It would not have cycled the action. The shooter probably thought the round was a dud and hand cycled the action.

This is possible with any ammo really and shooters need to know to stop and check the barrel when they pull trigger on a dud as it maybe a squib instead. An experienced shooter may feel or hear the difference, but a less experienced person very likely will not.

Shooting 5.1gr of 700-x will shoot a pill out of my operator with tight springs, but it will fail to cycle the action and reload a second round. If you have a 1911 with a squib then I doubt it cycled the action and was prolly just a reflex to manually cycle the next round.

I had to learn that reflex on my XD40 tactical because it hated any ammo I bought for it. It was like a stuck up American woman who insisted that I buy a ring that was no less than $10k... Finally I dumped it off at my LGS and let someone else have her...

But a 1911 cycling on a squib? Oh I MUST see this gun...
