So I was wondering if it was legal to set a single press and reload at a campground?

How would they even know you're reloading?? We used to bring one of those fold up benches that HD sells, stick a MEC9000 on it, and load shells at the shotgun rangeOriginally posted by KestryllThis guy is a complete and total idiot.

It's not illegal, unless that particular campground doesn't allow ammunition or the components of ammunition in the campground. If firearms are allowed, then ammunition and the components are allowed. In national parks like Yosemite, no firearms are allowed. However, you'd need to read the fine print to see if ammunition is banned there. If not, have at it.Comment

OP - care to tell us which one? BLM sites are pretty complete with rules; and most may require you to check in anyway for such things - like if you plan to have a camp fire you have to check in and I think this will fall under the same or similar category.sigpic

Private campgrounds that come with fire pit and have a space number and parking spot, usually allow fires without a formal permit. You just have to follow the rules by not leaving the fire unattended.
Places where camping is allowed but are not considered "private" require a fire permit, a bucket of water, and shovel to be near the fire.
To the OP, it's simple. If ammo is allowed, then reloading is allowed. However, if ammo is not allowed, then there's no reason why you can't do everything except charge a case and a seat a bullet. I don't think there's any laws about where you can resize or trim, chamfer and deburr brass cases, or even seat primers. If no ammo is allowed and you want to get some progress done, just bring everything except, firearms, powder, and bullets.Comment

I am just planning on a road trip to Montana and back. I had the idea of just finding a chill place and maybe camping a few days where I might set up a single stage press. I just wondered if there were any laws I am not aware of. I don't think most campgrouds will have rules specific to reloading ammo. I just thought how nice it would be to crank out some rounds in a nice environment other than garage or living room.OP - care to tell us which one? BLM sites are pretty complete with rules;Comment

Cowboy up ...
Check it out.
This is based on the old Lyman setup from years ago. Cowboys would put it in their saddlebag.

I use mine in the living room to prep cases, pistol cases, mainly. I haven't tried it with rifle rounds.I'm not having a glass of wine, I'm having SIX. It's called a tasting and it's classy.

In National Parks like Yosemite, firearms are 100% legal as long as you comply with the state laws for whatever NP you are going to visit. Sorry but, the law changed several years ago and your information is out of date and incorrect. It's not illegal, unless that particular campground doesn't allow ammunition or the components of ammunition in the campground.
