.45 ACP load question

    .45 ACP load question

    I have some 230gr Rainer RN plated bullets, and found load data for lead bullets and TMJ, and FMJ. I've heard people say use lead, and others say just go for FMJ. So not sure which to do, or if I should use the TMJ data?

    You can use either data the .45 acp, The .45 acp cartridge is slow anyways and plating separation is not likely to occur due to the low velocity.
    In the end your firearm will decide which load it will like.

      I noticed that the FMJ and TMJ loads were nearly identical as well,

          The FMJ data reflects a slight increase in friction of the copper jacketing vs. cast bullets. This is because of copper's greater hardness over lead, plus the lube that cast bullets must use.

          Any time I work up a load, therefore, I know I'm safe using FMJ starting-load data. This has worked out very well in practice.

            I have not tested it yet, but I think that PC might also give lower pressures to rounds as well, therefore needed less powder, therefore have slower velocities since it takes a fraction of the pressure buildup to set them free.

            Yeah anyways, just thought I would say...

              Just for the record and technical accuracy, it's not the hardness of the material on the exterior of the bullet, but the melting temperature and thermal conductivity of that material WRT the effects of friction heating when it scoots down the barrel with an mild interference fit.......
