I am seeing pistol ammo with brass, steel and aluminum cases and rifle ammo with steel and brass, anybody know if there is a difference in weight between metals for the case alone. I realize it wouldnt be much for just a handfull of rounds but if you were to carry say 1000 rounds, could it be a pound or 2 lighter depending on the metal of the casings?

Sounds like it's time for you to break out a scale and a calculator, since you're curious.

I dont have a digital scale, thats why I was asking here.Comment

Oh, I didn't realize.
Wait right here while I go find a steel, brass and aluminum casing, weight them and then do the math for you.
Any particular cartridge your interested in or should I just mix them up?
Are you beginning to get a clue as to what you are asking?
This is what, your 5th or 6th post? You're off to a great start.
Curiosity is a great thing. It's best satisfied with a little effort on your part instead of an easily posted question on the Internet. I'm betting, with just a little thought and effort, you can figure out your own answer. What do ya think?NRA Life Member

1k of brass .223 cases is ~13.5 lbs
Wolf Polyformance 55gr, is 12.6lbs per 500 or 25.2lbs per 1k
1k of 55gr bullets is 8lbs (highpower790)
Standard 55gr load of TAC is 25gr, or 3.6lbs
Therefore load is 11.6lbs per 1k (not including case)
25.2lbs - 11.6lb is 13.6lbs
It would seem there is basically no weight savings with steel over brass. These are generic numbers and large assumptions but I would wager that you are not going to find 15% weight savings with those numbers working out as close as they are. Alternatively you could simply look up shipping weight on midway for 1k of brass cased 55gr (26lbs) and 500 rounds of steel case 55gr (12.6lbs). Allowing for packaging differences they are essentially the same.
All the above was simply googled, and while DrD was needlessly grouchy the fact that I did that in five minutes is why he called you a lazy f*ck.Last edited by milotrain; 04-02-2015, 7:09 PM.weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.

You did. I was being sh*tty in solidarity with you.I felt the same way, but you got there first so I figured I'd google it. Next time if I get there first the mathball is in your court.
In our defense this is a hobby defined by self direction, investigation, caution and the ability to make good scientific wild *** guesses based on research and experience. It is a hobby with a FOUNDATION in doing it yourself.Last edited by milotrain; 04-02-2015, 10:10 PM.weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.

I was posting in support of the smackdown. Really.
I appreciate the butt kicking, self sufficient attitude here. Do some research, try to figure something out, THEN ask your question. It's the way things ought to be.Comment

Yeah, THE POWER OF PRICKS COMPEL YOU!
I actually have all of those cases on hand. Maybe later on I will pull them out and weigh them.
Although we know what it will be, the aluminum are the lightest, followed by the hmmm, steel, then the brass perhaps. but unless you are lugging 2k 9mm shells around, it aint gonna make much difference.Last edited by stilly; 04-03-2015, 8:58 AM.7 Billion people on the planet. If talking pistol calibers.. I was flying off to a match in AZ and was wondering if there was a difference in brass cased ammo and the Blazer stuff from CCI. This was over 10 years ago.. I determined that with the 11 pound limit on ammo, I could have packed about 350 rounds of the Aluminum cased stuff over my 300 rounds of brass cased stuff.. so yes, the aluminum non reloadable stuff could stack up to a good savings in weight if you are not going to reload it..Comment
