What load do LEOs use in their ARs

In my quest to find the ideal 5.56 round for me I've found many threads debating the lethality of any given load that the military uses, but it occurs to me that since any round the military fires is subject to the Hague Convention, we should look to the LEOs and what they use, as that they are not limited in their choice of ammunition by the Hague convention.

I should say that I'm generally not looking to buy ammo based on its lethality but rather its accuracy. I enjoy long range target shooting and hunting dove, not preparing for another "SHTF' scenario I pray never happens. It makes me sick just to choose a round based on its ability to kill a man.

Anyone knows whats in the magazines of SWAT's AR-15s or the Local law inforcement's Patrol rifles?

Fast is fine, accuracy is final. You got to learn to shoot slow, real fast...

.mil uses XM193 and M855 Penetrators IIRC...

edit: didnt read the "It makes me sick just to choose a round based on its ability to kill a man." but what factors do you think LEO are looking for in a round?!?

Last time I checked they dont make 5.56 in OC rounds...

I've seen a couple departments with Hornady TAP ammo. I think the main consideration is over pentration. Most of the stuff I shot at the patrol rifle course was hunting/sporting ammo, no FMJ.

The LEA that shoot at my range leave a lot of Winchester brass and empty boxes of 55gr. Winchester Ranger.
I occasionally see Federal LE too.

I think it has more to do with which manufacturer they get the best deal from.
The LEO's in my area pretty much all shoot Winchester Ranger in all their duty weapons.

They actually use the 64 grain Winchester Ranger SP, maybe not the most accurate, but a good reliable round none the less. Only problems have been with the gun, not the win ammo. If I could find these at a good price I would use them for hunting (small game, varmint etc.). The only thing u might find at the store will be the hornandy tap(not the one sold to LE) or the federal which some agencies use.

                Generally softpoints.

.mil do not use XM193, they use REAL M193...

Some "fortunate" branches use Mk262(mod1), which are made by BHA, with 77grSMK.

We use Winchester 55 gr. at our range. I never asked but I imagine bulk price has alot to do with it.

5.56 isn't really designed to kill a man...just wound really badly

There are lots of other good reasons to choose a 223/5.56 as well.

Absolutely! I just found that out at buying 100rds at walmart for $40, pretty good for retail prices. I don't want to sound nuts, I was just asking because this is the first time I've considered using a rifle in an HD application rather than for target shooting or hunting.

The rounds are chosen because of their penetration- to STOP the threat. If the goal were to shoot to kill, they'd use a bigger bullet with much more power.
