Why I stocked up on reloading stuff over the last year.

I know that reloading stuff is next in a couple months if this 223 freak out buying goes for to long. Starting last year I decided to fork over the money and stock up on rifle reloading components. I bought 7000 projectiles, 18 lbs of N135 and N130 powder and about 10,000 primers. I am glad I did with the current environment. I was really about ready to sell off some because I didn't think we would ever get this crazy again, but looks like I was wrong. I even stopped reloading plinking ammo because it got down so cheap.

It is like doing a beach dive.

You gotta get past all the waves before you get to calmer waters where you can switch from snorkel to on demand air and drop to the sea floor...

Only 7k projectiles though? Oh, and no brass? Gonna reload the hell out of that one case eh? Good for you!

Plenty of brass on hand. I have some brass tumbling right now. It's funny, I almost bought 1000 rnds of that Walmart SS109 because at $10.00 for 30 rounds of reloadable brass I figured why not. Instead I only bought 8 boxes. It does seem a little underpowdered though.

Is the new possible 556 law causing a 223 scare?

All of the manufactures are much better equipped to do deal with any sort of "panic" buying this time around vs. 2012/13. Though I don't really see that happening this time... certainly not at the same scale

I did that before Y2K. I got primers that are 20 years old and still fine.

Yeah, no kidding huh? I would not consider 2 whole sleeves of primers stocked up for anything.
You really need to just keep buying and buying.
For years, every time I would go to the gun show I would walk out with at least one case of ammo, or sleeve of primers,or 8lb jug of something. Like eating an elephant, one bite at a time.

I did the same thing OP and I'm glad I did it now. I have enough handgun/rifle primers, powder, cases, and projectiles to ride out a temporary ammo shortage.

I believe the 2012/13 ammo shortage turned a lot of people like myself into reloaders. Once you get into it there's no going back to buying off the shelf ammo.

Nicely put. Powder, primers are a long term purchase. But bullets - they keep going up in price and quantity buys are negated by mailing costs. I dont want to cast.

Bullets was the easier part for me since I never had to deal with availability, limits, or hazmat fees... I got two other close friends and placed a distributor order for a pallet of xtreme bullets.

My cost per round for ammo is secured for years to come.

I wouldn't call 7000 bullets, 10,000 primers and 17lbs of powder "stocking up". I'd consider it just another purchase that was short on powder.

OP...you've achieved a "comfort level". One man's "stocked up" may not be to another's.

Now...take advantage of whatever's cheap. Currently I'd say brass and primers are good deals. Bullets are as well. If nothing else they become viable trades if/when they become shorted.

Just wait for for next year's election. Things will get tight again with certain types of ammo and reloading components. Nothing like the 2012-14 shortagage, but it will be noticable.
