Anyone know where I can get 5.45x39 ammo where the projectile doesn't attract to a magnet?

I just got some Wolf 5.45mm at www.ammunitiontogo.com, I think that is without steel core.Last edited by Josh3239; 04-05-2010, 12:24 AM. -
sorry to break it to you Josh, but Im about 101% positive that what you just bought has a bi-metal jacket which=magnetic. But if your range's dont care, then I guess it aint all that big a deal

I guess that Josh will be shooting that Wolf at Shooter's Paradise indoors on Saturday with the rest of the group. Jpach is right, it is magnetic with a bi-metal jacket.Comment

5.45x39: This has been thus far strictly an Eastern block military loading and as a result everything has been magnetic (some more or less than others). I think the ammunition manufactures have not yet come out with the ammo is two-fold:
1. Only the AK-74 types are chambered for it and they haven't been coming over to the US like the 7.62 type AK clones and SKS did a few years ago (especially from China).
2. I don't think the 5.45x39 has been standardized yet with the CIP/SAMMI and the rifle groove diameter vary from .219-.221". That makes it incompatible with our common .224" bullets. Additional cost of new swaging dies.
In the end, the market doesn't yet exist for a manufacturer to tool up case forming and bullet swaging dies for a cartridge that is not yet standardized. Too much liability.Luck favors the prepared.
The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.

You can easily load your own non magnetic.. 545X39 using reformed 222 rem cases and resized .224 projectiles down to .221. Loading data is very close to 221 fireball data.. I'd use a longer bullet like the 69 or 77 Sierra Match king.. to match the factory OAL You will get a true match grade round, the 74 are very accurate rifles and are 1-7 twist.. there are also a few east German bolt guns out there as well chambered in the 545.. The bullet lube/sizing kits are cheap from Lee @ $25. I've put together a group buy for die sets and have over 50 orders for dies so far, they are a custom order two die set. I closed the buy because I didn't want to do hundreds of orders (lots of work) but I may have some extra sets to sell after I receive the order.. we are still waiting for the production run to be finished. If you really want a production run of brass cases we all need to e-mail starline brass and ask for it to be made (I have already) it should be no more expensive to produce than say 222 cases. But they will require a large run like 100000 plus cases to pay for the tool up costs..I bet a group buy we could cover that # fairly easily if the cost per case were reasonable.. There is a cpi data for the 545X39 cartridge some one sent it to me by e mail but I could not unzip it, I'll try to locate it and post it for the more computer savvy.. PPV can also load and import a bunch of brass cases 545 and graf and son or widners will also need a bunch of e mails sent to them.. Reloadable brass cases is not a matter of if, but when and who bring this to market.. B2BComment
