First day reloading and ran into a problem.

SO today was my first day of reloading and I made 50 rounds with different weights of powder inside to see what works best. But out of the 50 i found 4 that the base of the case wouldn't fit the barrel and would get stuck like it was bulging out.

So i came home and knocked out another 100 and I took my barrel and just started testing each one and out of the 100 i made i found 8 more with the same problem. what am i doing wrong?

I was thinking that i need to open the case mouth more maybe im forcing the bullet in and the bottom of the case is buckling.

Thank you guys for any insight that you give.

Gonna need a few more details. Pistol, rifle, shot-shell, artillery? Little things like that.

What dies? Are you sure its the base and not the case mouth sticking? Could be a full length sizing issue or a crimp/belling issue

Sure your sizing die is properly adjusted? The bottom of the die should be against your shellplate/shellholder. Could also have the seating die too far down and it crushes the case, not all cases will be exactly the same length.

So I'm using the Hornady LNL press with Hornady dies. im also using the PTX for the powder measure. And yeah its the base because you can feel it and when i mic it its outta spec.

When i go into the sizing / decaping die i feel alot of resistance. should I ?

Sounds like fired brass has the G-smile.

If the bottom of your die is touching your shell holder and still giving you problems you may just need small base sizing die. If the problem persist you'll need to resize those cases through a single stage press with a modified shell holder and a small base die. The modified shell holder will let the case go on further thus resizing the base of the case completely.

Also, investing on a loaded case gauge will aid in pointing out bad reloads so it won't mess your grove at the range.

Yea there should be resistance, but not a ton like crushing the case. They could have been fired from an un-supported chamber and are "glocked" although that's more common on .40 s&w, I haven't personally seen it on 9mm. Was this brass fired by you or range pickup?

Might consider one of these as well for QC

Size your brass and drop it in (before doing anything else). If its a problem, then likely the bulged brass as discussed earlier. If the problem shows up after you load, then die adjustment issue (again as discussed earlier)

Pro-tip, you can just take the barrel out of your gun and use it as a go-no go check too.

As stated above, make sure your resizing and decapping die (1st stage) touches slightly touches the shell plate. You shouldnt feel much resistance but some is ok, also it helps to have a separate factory crimp die, if you dont you should look into getting one, that should help you out with your bulge/ buckling hiccups. Keep us informed.
