Kind of a dumb range brass question

I'm new to reloading and went to shoot at an indoor range. I used ammo that was reloadable and after every shot I was hoping the brass would land in my booth but 70% of the time it landed else where, like in front where there were tons of other brass and it was trying to look for a needle in a haystack. Not to mention it's dangerous going past the shooting line. So I got on my knees and used a pooper scooper to try to recover my brass. Luckily it wasn't busy. There are cameras and I feel like a total idiot trying to recover my precious brass.
Is there a better way of shooting at an indoor range and still be able to get all my brass back?

You can try and set up one of those brass catchers. I use one - works pretty good.

You can set this on a tripod, benchtop, etc. Not perfect - but it will catch most of your brass as long as you can position it properly.

Brass catchers work well. I know there are some that attach onto the rifle, or stand on your shooting bay.

Once it goes past the line of fire it usually belongs to the range, for safety reasons if nothing else. Some ranges have specific rules on brass collection, check with yours.

Shot with friends. My gun kicks brass forward all the time. Picking up my non reloading friends brass makes up for my lost brass.

Oh yeah also switch to revolvers you will never lose brass again

Same here, my Sig 556 fling them into obit. Funny, had a guy tag along (buddy's girlfriend's freind's boyfriend) When we were done he wanted ALL the brass. I said if it ended up in my bucket its going home with me. He hasn't come back out since. I don't care what people think, if I pick it up its mine.

Hint: Load mixed junk brass to use at the range, then pick up someone else's brand new brass (after they left).

Get a Revolver and/or Single shots like a TC Contender/Encore.

I have one of these...use on the occasions I shoot a semi auto pistol at the range...it works ok once you get the hang of it...your hand goes through the loop and the "catcher" sort of stands up in front of the ejection port...takes a bit of practice and only get's about 75% of the brass...but sure better than the alternative...don't go across the line!

My biggest brass maker is the AR platform. I have a couple of mesh bags that attach to the barrel and catch the brass. I unzip the mesh bag and the brass falls at my feet.

Most shooters are more than happy to have you take their brass. Just means less they have to clean up! Nothing weird or unusual about asking either.

Some ranges are weird about scavenging brass. Some are just glad youre cleaning it up instead of them. I havent seen any range that says i cant pick up and take home my own property either.

When I shoot my Deagle at the range, I have to make a choice. If I use loads taht are blue dot or 300-mp I know that the brass will fly back and bounce off the wall onto the guy next to me, in SOME cases, i have even hit the guy next to me while he had his back towards me and was messign with his stuff.

OR I can shoot the H-110 loads that shake the whole area and know that I MIGHT recover 90% or less because they tend to hit the ground to my right front and run forward...

You need to look at it THIS way: If you shoot common calibers like 45/9/40 then you are worrying without a reason. Simply ask the people next to you on both sides if they have a problem with you picking up their brass. If they say no, then GRAB IT ALL. Eventually you will have plenty of brass with those calibers. I do not even reload for 9mm, but I have over 165 lbs of it waiting to be cleaned... The reason why is because I pick THAT up the most at the ranges. MOST people shoot 9mm, then it seems .40 and then .45 and then 38/357 then .223 or at least that is what I am finding at my indoor ranges. My .44 mag rounds are easy to spot and pick up though, until they scramble all over the place.

When I was at a range the other day, I noticed a guy next to me hunting down his 9mm brass. I laughed and asked him if he wanted any of the stuff I was picking up and he said no, that he only was trying to get his own. You can not do that if you want to survive range trips. He was a nice guy and I even got his phone number (knock it off pervs!) to give him a call for a shooting day out at Corona Sportsman's Club whereever that is. It sounds cool, but he was telling me how every weekend or third sunday or something they have a shoot that is open to the public and they mix it up as to what kinds of competitions they have. Seemed like a nice guy. Had I not asked about the brass on the floor, I would never have known that nor made a friend.
