AMD is working on something to, at long last, compete with Intel's chips. But it isn't really on the market.

The CPU game is still INTEL INTEL INTEL with AMD only holding in the "bargain" category. Not that AMD chips are "bad", they are far less expensive than the I7s but they are not as powerful as the I7 and work hard to stay on par with the latest I5s.

If you want peak performance, its intel I7 and nothing else.

Bargain gaming can be done cheaply on the top end ( and I mean TOP) AMD/GPU versions.
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

This! I have used AMD for my gaming PC's for years.. made the switch over to Intel a couple of years ago and what a difference!

I also suggest looking into a SSD (Solid State Drive) for faster boot times (usually less than 10 seconds, only downside is they are still pretty expensive for a decent sized drive) and using a regular HDD for storing everything else or for back-ups.

This is my current PC that was built a couple of years ago.. (I do realize there are probably newer and better products out there now)

      Intel i5 4570 3.2ghz w/ Zalman 120mm cpu fan
      MSI Z87-G65 Gaming Motherboard
      Patriot Viper 3 32gb RAM
      Samsung 840 EVO 756gb SSD
Samsung 840 Pro Series 256gb SSD (bought this first, then quickly out grew its size capacity)
      Western Digital 1tb HDD
Dual EVGA GeForce 760 4gb video cards (SLI'd)
EVGA Supernova G2 850w power supply

I built a "gaming" PC to run some computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs. It got real expensive real fast, well at least relative to today's prices. The Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition chip was over $1k alone, but the processor can be overclocked to well over 5 GHz. Even with liquid cooling the sucker gets warm and eats electricity. AMD has a relatively comparable 8 core CPU in the FX-8320 chip that can be overclocked to about 4+ GHz, but is way cheaper in the $120 to $150 range. At this price, it would leave you a lot more money for other goodies while still performing well.

Ya I have heard Intel is top tier, although the deal for an AMD FX8320 and R9 are so cheap! lol

i7, 16 gig of ram, SSD HD 240gig+, Nvidia , and a 970 video card is a good start.

Need to know your budget. Are we talking a decent rig on the cheap, or a $4,000 monster?

Back in 1988 or 1989 I think I paid around $4k for this state-of-the-art "gaming" rig:

This "Lunchbox" style portable came with a 286 processor, 640K of RAM and a 30 Mb hard drive. It also had a parallel port, RGB monitor port and serial port. It was much smaller and easier to carry than Compaq's early portables.
Whatever the OP builds, it will be vastly faster than the best mainframes of that era at a fraction of the cost. My company had a Cray Y-MP1 that operated at a speed of 154 MHz, while the Intel I7 4820K t4 has a speed of 3900 MHz. The Cray also cost well into the seven figure range. We always took it hard in the *** when it came to upgrading our computers.

Most games cant use an i7 to its full potential. Save $ use an i5 and still run at full spec

I think icantdrive55's configuration can be done for under $1k.

When I got my first job, I built a top of the line gaming rig. That was 2006. I can't remember everything that's in it, but it has Thermaltake armor case, gigabyte Nvidia 590 SLI motherboard, Sound Blaster Audigy, AMD FX processor but I can't remember which one, Two gigabytes RAM, Corsair. Has served me great for years, only had to replace the power supply, and the graphics card just recently gave out.

I had to 320 gig hard drives, Seagate, and one of them fried shortly after I built the thing. Sounded like a chainsaw.
