windows 8.1 being forced on me

looks like my gaming/school laptop is forcing me to "update" to 8.1 been putting it off for a while now, but today they gave me the popup without a remind me later option, just remind me in 4 hours. thanks Microsoft i enjoy being forced to do something against my will. i wonder if i will get a popup saying "this will be our little secret" after the "upgrade" is done............ is there any way to stop it?

why dont you want 8.1 ? win 8 is the new vista/ME .... and who knows you might get a update to 10 when its public

and BTW Microcrap did not force you to use auto updates you could turn them off and deal with it manually or not take updates at all and hope there is no huge hole found in the OS

because i don't like change. i know its a petty reason, but the computer did everything i needed it to do fine. school work fine, games fine, web stuff fine. if it is not broke i don't see any reason to change.
ok, i found out how to tun auto update off. it will have to let me choose to download the update now if i want to update i will do it when i am ready. when i go over to the power icon it does not say update and restart anymore so i think i am good to go.

I don't think win 7 is actually more stable than 8.1. At least haven't noticed any issues with 8.1 more than 7 and I use both all the time.

As for being forced to upgrade, it would depend on which version of windows you are using. If you are 7, I'd stick with 7. Anything before 7 and I'd up graded to 8.1.

Anyway, it's almost a moot point since 10 will be out soon and from what I've been reading, MS has fixed what people don't like about 8 by keeping what they liked about 7 (ie traditional windows OS design).

8.0 to 8.1 fixed a bunch of security issues. You should update.

Update to 8.1, then install classic shell. With that, you never have to see the hideous metro interface, ever, and it's almost like having win7 again.

Seriously though, 8.1 is much more stable, and has a few nice improvements.. Those aside there are some rather gnarly security bugs you need to get that they packaged into 8.1. I wouldn't advise shopping or even fapping on 8... Especially if you have a webcam.

my guess is this is just like that annoying Java thing that Larry Ellison spews/spams to try and trick you into SafeSearch or whatever virus so he can get .0001 cents after you waste 1/2 hour.

back before he did the Java spam thing, Larry was insisting that his company should be the one to store/handle all our computer needs and you would only have a 'dumb terminal'.

being force to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1, or from 7 to 8.1? Don't see how the later is possible, so it would be from 8.0 to 8.1, which is what you want.

do the update to 8.1 and then install all the additional updates that are available. it will make it much easier to operate, even without a "classic shell" addon.

You get the start button and the title bar in touch apps. Other changes are under the hood and are probably solid though I never had a problem anyway.
What's the big complaint about?

Never had a problem with 8.0 either, I hardly ever used the start button on 7; I press start on the keyboard instead, so much faster most of the time.

Sounds really petty if all the complaints are about the start button... tablet interface is gone with one click or press; though it is nice if you have a touchscreen laptop.

My complaints are about the secure boot but it's to fight piracy so totally understandable on their part.

That's like refusing to switch from Vista to 7...

Windows 8.1 is the only reason the OS is actually not terrible. Still not my favorite OS ever (win 7 or linux ftw) but my tablet is coming with 8.1 and android dual booted.
