Windows 10 Consumer Preview

Nothing in life is Free. Being forced into a subscription based OS (yes they claim they aren't doing that with Windows 10*) is what Microsoft is planning with all their "Cloud OS" talk.

I use * because if Microsoft use the same model for windows 10 as they do with windows live (silver free, gold subscription), then they would be able to say Windows 10 is free.

As for Apple, I'm don't own anything with an apple logo.

That is interesting, I had not considered that. Well we will know for sure soon enough and no one is being forced to upgrade at this point. Personally I don't see them going with the subscription model for consumers but I could see that for enterprise environments.

Hmmm.

I might spend $150/year for a subscription if the M$OS(u)X doesn't suck, AND if I could install it on all machines of mine, my lady's, my kid's, parents and in-laws... however only if it came w/M$ Office w/updates would I subscribe to the service, as the good-old Technet+ subscription might be a better option... ... ...

The old-people listed above seem to do better with not installing crap they don't need, and do better staying uninfected, with Linux distros...

Not true, it's free to upgrade to it for a year. NO subscriptions...Updates will always be free.

So, recent Microsoft Windows versions are so unpopular, and there's so little trust now, that Microsoft executives now have to give the OS away gratis? Given their past practices, that's very telling right there. As they say, "the first hit is free."

Not just free as in beer (in most cases), but also free as in speech/freedom, which is the even more important aspect.

Strategic, with free OS the OEMs can bring cheaper devices to compete against Android and the biggest benefit is developers have a potentially larger market (one OS and Universal App). It's all about business, they are already making more in non Windows areas as per this quarter results

9 must have been really good or really bad.

9 was probably good so they skipped it and created 10 so that is screwed up like Vista was.

so far on my 8.1 laptop no issues yet I have had it a year so far so good.

I really like Win7 though that is on my desktop and my gamer PC.

Really? Has the tablet interface been completely removed yet? If not it has nothing "good" from 7. A desktop is not a tablet.

Also, surface isn't new. MS has been working on it for a very long time, over ten years.

No, a desktop is not a tablet ... but I still want the tablet stuff there for, y'know, my TABLET. I just want to be able to turn it off for, y'know, everything else.

So, I've got Windows 10 running in a VM right now - I'm writing this post from it, in fact. First impressions ... so far I like it. I like the start menu with the live tiles. One of the things that I found surprising about using 8.1 on my tablet was how useful the live tiles can actually be ... for a tablet. The start menu with the tiles looks to be just as useful ... for a not-tablet. I'm a fan.

Right now I've got VMWare set to give it 4 cores (out of 8), 8 GB (out of 16) and 1 GB of VRAM (out of 4), and it really seems nice, even with the overhead of running Win 7 HP and VMWare above and beyond.

I'm pretty happy with it. After I play with it a little more, see if I can break it, and see how some of the compatibility stuff shakes out with respect to software I MUST have to pay the mortgage ... I might even be willing to dump Windows 7.

Agreed. Quite honestly I think desktop users are in the minority these days and the 8/8.1 UI was just a little ahead of the time. Win 10 on laptop or desktop will default to desktop mode. They've just made it really easy to switch if you would like to. It also helps support a lot of those new 2 in 1 devices where the screen detaches and becomes a tablet.

More information about where they are headed. Quite honestly if they came out with a unified platform instead of the disconnected windows phone 7, windows phone 8 and windows RT I think they would have a much larger market share in the phone and tablet area. When I buy a piece of software or app I want ot to run anywhere on all of my devices.

We'll see how the important stuff works probably in the next few days. I've got the beta of [Next-gen expensive engineering software covered by an NDA] downloading right now. Probably get it installed tomorrow or Thursday.

I should have clarified on the consumer end of things. At work I use a wyse thin client or a Surface RT to connect to a virtual desktop. Microsoft has shown a much better model of productivity when it comes to their tablets than the two other major OSes. Ever try to do any real work on an ipad? People can hate on RT and the lack of apps but IE, office, and the Citrix receiver are all I need to be productive for work. I still stand behind my statement as desktop is the minority in the consumer space. Ever go into BestBuy...see how many desktops you see vs tablets and touch enabled laptops.

I've been using Windows 10 as my only OS on my home computer for the last 3 months and it is what 8 should have been.

Looks good, but just like every OS since XP too much CPU goes into background, and immediate responsiveness still suffers to this day. One shouldn't have to click, or right click 2x for something to happen... then again, it is in preview-...

They are still sticking with the drag-azzzy indexing service...

@the86d Looks like you need to remove some programs from startup, I have never seen this issue because of OS processes. Check my task manager screenshots, Windows 8.1 or 10 are way superior to XP in terms of optimization on startup or background processes.

Installing my copy now. Let's see how it shakes out. Windows 8 wasn't great, but not nearly the horror that everyone claims it to be either. There were aspects of it I did like, but then, I usually switch into the desktop mode as soon as I start it up. I rarely do anything from the tiles.

10 works fine as a daily driver.. i have been using 10 since first technical preview, and just updated to the 9926 build.

its basically 8, but a little lighter weight, has a hybrid start menu etc.

works fine, so throw it on your laptop or spare machine
