    7ate9...10.
    Is it Linux-based, YET?

    I won't install until SP1 is available.

No, it's not a "new Microsoft". It's the same Microsoft, trying to put on a less-distasteful face for the moment.

Given Microsoft's track record over the last 20 years, I have no intention of that company's software running on my computers. They'd have to make a lot of major changes in corporate philosophy and execution before I'd be willing to trust them again.

Really? Has the tablet interface been completely removed yet? If not it has nothing "good" from 7. A desktop is not a tablet.

Also, surface isn't new. MS has been working on it for a very long time, over ten years.

...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

Respect the viewpoints here, but not sure how the corporate philosophy or execution matters when evaluating technology. Its run like any other business, with some talented folks and some ordinary. Almost all, Google, Apple, Samsung have their share of "bad" deeds. But one can avoid products from certain company, which is okay.

And comparing to Linux, there is nothing unique in it that makes it more resilient. I never see OS architects bring this point, but just the consumers and biased writers. User was and still is the weakest link in security, and software defects is a reality (just check national vulnerability database for Linux and Windows kernel)

Finally to the touch interface, there are limited ways in which an OS can be made simultaneous touch, mouse, keyboard friendly. IMHO, Windows is the one which got it near right. But to your point, Windows 10 can be configured to only work like Windows 7 start menu (which as you know is not, as touch friendly as tile interface). I actually find it best of both worlds, touch for content consumption and mouse/keyboard for content creation.

I am really enjoying the Win 10 preview. Has worked flawlessly for me. Gaming is great on it and I love the mix of the metro interface with the start menu.

              MS is like the government.
They keep adding more and more without really fixing or dumping the excrement that is a waste of resources and a drag on productivity.

I'll probably give it a shot, seeing as how Microsoft has been consistent in the every other version works - rule.

                Windows 95: Bad.
                Windows 98: Good
                Windows ME: Awful.
                Windows XP: Good.
                Windows Vista: bad
                Windows 7: good
                Windows 8: ugh

I guess that is true for the Star Trek movies as well

Hololens is a gimmick - just like Google glass was.

It will be nice for some gamers, but for the vast majority of applications, there's no point; and the idea that it will work on real world 3D landscapes seamlessly is bogus.

I doubt the technology to accurately create augmented reality is here yet and even if it was, what programs would use such technology? Why is it better to use a hologram for R&D than a plastic model? Does anyone even make modeling software for holograms?

Not to mention the silly hat you have to wear.
I use to be an anarchist but I quit that; there's too many rules.

@db42 worth checking the webinar. It's already used by NASA and a whole quadcopter was designed with Holo Studio, which will be also released along with Windows 10.

I'll be upgrading my Win 8.1 laptop to it as soon as the released version is available. If I actually like it, I'll upgrade the Win 7 desktop. Linux staying on the work computer though.

They should have stopped at XP.

Just know it is not free for life. It is rumored that it will be free for the first year and then be on a subscription basis like they did with office products. I am sure once you go to 10 you can not go back and are stuck paying for the subscription. No. Thank. You.

Too many rumors, better to wait for official news. One that I heard is free updates till underlying hardware is supported
