eBay "China" Cable toners and testers...

This is just for having around the house if I ever need it if I were to help somebody else out (although I should label my home wiring closet to "ground" my son if needed), so I am not looking to spend >$100... and not really going to for something I will probably never need. I just want continuity and tone, really.

Anyone had bad luck with eBay "China" cable toners and testers?

I had the 7 dollar cable tester from china, worked fine. Even compared to a high end Fluke it did the job just as well. As for the tone generator, get a fox and hound, those are gems when you have 500 wire bundle mess. The "tone" sometimes bleed to the other wires. I think the best advice is to hunt, trace, then label or terminate to patch panel. Hopefully you dont have to do it again.

      DUDE!

I got a KILLER one for you. If you JUST wanna test cables, check out this one...

It seems to work great so far, it has no bad connects, I WISH it had an on/off switch but oh well, it is always on so anytime that button is pressed you hear it tone up and then breeeeeat dweeeee. SO I got a portable HD clamshell case by case logit that fits it snugly AND provides protection from when I toss it into my bag and a cable or tool or else hits it and presses the button. Oh and the white thingy comes off too.

NOT a bad buy for the price. I have had this for a little longer than a year now, I have tested about 50 cables (all cat5)and I am liking it so far.

IF you want to TONE, then I suggest looking for those telephone ones, Like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ideal-Amplif...orcev4exp=true

Plug the box into the jack, flip the switch to turn it on, and then it emits a nee-ner-nee-ner-nee-ner type of tone and you can use the probe at the patch panel to run around cables (no need to stab them) and feel around for the sounds. Kinda cool.
I used one to track down a line at a business and it seemed to work well. I only used mine once though and the tones were so strong that I had to guess between 2-3 jacks when I got to the patch panel...

          Ha, I haven't seen BNC since the 90s. I'd recommend monoprice.com.
