WOW, Portable RAID setup with flash/SD cards?

I was just thinking, is it possible or has anyone made a mini-itx or SMALL device that had a raid setup and it used either SD cards or flash drives?

    Maybe like something temporary?

    Example:

I have a machine that I picked up today and they have 100GB of space used, 65GB of which is data.
Their HD is reporting SMART failure on allocation of sectors so since the HD is 5 or so years old, time to get a new one AND take them from XP to Windows 7 (they have a license for that that came with the system it looks like- YAY!)

SO, I got the crazy idea, since they LOVE their XP so much and have their programs installed, that I will give them vm player and convert their old OS into a VM for them in case they want to play on it still. BUT, I do not wanna bring in all of their photos and data into that VM as well, so I was thinking it would be cool to have a mini raid 5 or 6 setup using 32GB flash drives or SD cards ($16 each at microcenter...) and MOVE their things onto it temporarily until I have their other system finished and then I can continue the importing of their system.

In all honestly though, I will be cloning their current HD onto another HD and then seperating their data out of there and THEN once their picz and all are out, I will convert that physical machine to a VM and hopefully all will play nicely.

But I was just wondering about a quick and easy portable raid setup for things like this where I can move data into a secure location and then copy it back out when I have their other computer ready.

    Just an idea...

Has anyone ever done any raid 5 or 6 setups with flash drives or sd cards?
    Could be interesting...

I believe this is similar to what you're looking for.

If building for a client I would go with the mini-itx.

If building for myself, or a VM for a media center or security system I would probably use a raspberry pi.

What do they cost and where can you get one or what is it called?

This would just be a small portable secure file storage for temporary applications, but it would be nice to be able to hold about 150GB or so without having to have a computer there. Just like plug it in via usb or something and it is good to go, this is very close because I have a sata to usb device for making internal devices external.

If you've already got the little cord that goes from SATA to USB ... then all you need is an old 2.5" hard drive out of a laptop. Plug it into a USB port, and then you're good to go. As much hard drive space as you need - I've currently got 160, 250, 320, 500 and 750 GB drives that I swap around depending on what I need.

Not really worth it. Cost is about $75 with a 128GB max capacity.

Yeah, funny though that all of my damn hard drives have decided to get scarce now that I need them.

I was going to just do that too though, SOMEWHERe around here I have a 2.5" sata 250GB drive... SOMEWHERE...

I ended up using a 3.5" Constellation ES 500GB instead. Now I gotta sort the data and import the C:/ into VMware...

Rvicta: Thanks. Bummer. I was hoping for 64GB x4 at least...
