Building First PC - PSU question

Is it ok to use the 4 pin connector that's attached to a 8 pin connector?
Its the only 4 pin connector my PSU has

Yes. Its a tight squeeze..But I dont know if the 8 pin has to be connected as well to make it work. It should work though

Usually the 24 (or 20) pin has a 4 pin close to it. You should be able to use any free 4 pin. Is your PSU limited on connections or something? Are you sure its not a 20 + 4 pin connector?

        Yes its a 20+4
But it also requires another 4 pin by the CPU
The 4 pin thats connected with the 8 pin is the only 4 pin I have left.

It should work. Usually there is a 24 +8 +4 right next to each other and they all plug in. I dont see why it wouldnt work (if the 4 pin on the PSU is the same shape as the one on your mobo). Usually 4 pins are just 12v connectors with grounds for your processor.

Yeah what you got going on?

Whatever it is, I would suggest making the PSU one of your better components.

It will work, that 4-pin is there for this very scenario.

But as mentioned, please let us know the make and model of the PSU. A cheap PSU can brick an expensive machine.

Its a cheap build. Got tired of buying PCs that I couldn't upgrade

                  AMD FX-8350
                  16GB ram, kingston brand
                  Motherboard is gigabyte
                  Im putting a r9 280 in it
PSU is Ultra LSP v2 550 watt

But I do have a Corsair 750 I can swap if thats a bad PSU. I use the Corsair to power my Asic miners

550 Watt is not enough IMO for that build. especially if you plan to do any gaming. Use the 750 watt.

The fact that the PSU is an Ultra is reason to worry. Their PSUs have terrible reputations concerning reliability.

                      Go with the Corsair.

Yea, 550 wont be enough the 750 for sure. Screw Ultra, I will never buy anything from them again. For PSUs I recommend Corsair, Seasonic, and the new EVGA stuff seems untouchable.

I am waiting on parts for a very similar render node build. Can't get here fast enough!

What can i do to make my data transfer score higher? Brand new hard drive. Should I get an SSD?

I run a SSD as my OS and programs drive and use a regular hard drive for data storage. You will need around a 256gb drive for OS and Programs. What kind of drive do you have in there? Even with regular hard drives I get a much better score than that. You could add a second in RAID 0 for the ultimate in speed or in RAID 1 to get a little better speed and on top of that redundancy (redundancy is not a backup...Always make a backup).

I do highly recommend the SSD, it really makes a world of difference even over a expensive 10k RPM mechanical drive like a Velociraptor.
