A bill that requires all smartphones manufactured after July 1st, 2015 to include anti-theft measures if sold in the state of California was signed into law today. California governor Jerry Brown signed the bill, which was introduced back in February, and finally cleared the State assembly two weeks ago. Its aim is to make phones a less attractive target for thieves by requiring built-in tools that let consumers remotely lock, wipe, and disable the devices.

Android Device Manager can do it for Android based phones, tablets, etc. Free. ANd find your device. https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager

Funny though that this annoys people. If the phone makers opted to offer it cooked in, it's all good. The government requires, it is all bad.

This is one of those "issues" I will let others fight about as I see much bigger more valuable fish to fry and actually find the function a smart one to include. Who cares.

The gov't will attempt to use this feature claiming they need to disable a criminals cell phone.

The big deal is that it is required. This is a cost which is now mandated to the consumer. I see a big difference in opting to purchase a device with said features versus being forced to.

The asinine part is that legislators believe this will prevent crime. As soon as this technology is released someone will hack it. Currently iPhones and android phones, which feature this technology, are the cell phones most targeted for theft. The technology is no deterrent to theft.
