+1 for DuckDuckGo
+1 for DuckDuckGo
Claims not to track you, though I don't trust that from any US company anymore. Doesn't "bubble filter". Handy "instant answers" for some searches. Many shortcuts, for example, search "!w M1911" to get the Wikipedia article for "M1911" or "!wa violent crime in Chicago vs Houston" to have Wolfram Alpha compare/compute for you.
Before I heard of shop42a.com, I'd search Amazon by searching DDG for "!a stuff I want". List of !bang shortcuts here: https://duckduckgo.com/bang.html I wish that shop42a.com had a search URL. If it did, I'd ask to have a !bang shortcut added for it.
http://ddg.gg redirects to https://duckduckgo.com/ Very handy as a home page on a smartphone/laptop: if you're at a wifi hotspot with a "captive portal" login screen, you get the login screen until you're logged into the wifi. Once you're logged in, ddg.gg will take you to encrypted search.
With Google, it'd be http://google.com (not encrypted) or https://google.com (prevents captive portal from showing up).
Invites users to tell them what they want or even submit code:

I use Tineye for reverse image searches.
Tor is free, and provides way better privacy than anything else that works with the regular web. NoScript blocks JS tracking, but does nothing for IP tracking. It's made for system security, not privacy. DoNotTrackMe relies on identifying trackers and blocking the ones they know about. I don't trust stuff like that, it's too easy for someone to just slip under the radar.
With the Tor Browser Bundle, you can send me all the cookies you want. I don't care, because they won't be saved to disk to begin with, and junk in memory is cleared with the "New Identity" button. IP gets traced to some random country. I've seen ads in German because they thought I was in Germany.
Tor stops local tracking/eavesdropping, too. Everything stays encrypted until it gets to the "exit node" which is often in another country, and can't be connected to you. The exit node can eavesdrop, and this has happenned many times, so you still want to use HTTPS sites.
Blocks guns from Google Shopping results, calls them "non-family safe":"Google AdWords doesn't allow the promotion of weapons or devices designed to cause serious harm or injury. The promotion of weapons includes guns, gun parts or hardware, ammunition, bombs, knives, throwing stars, and brass knuckles.
We've created this policy to comply with legal regulations."
Established in 1975, the Institute for Legislative Action (ILA) is the "lobbying" arm of the National Rifle Association of America. ILA is responsible for preserving the right of all law-abiding individuals in the legislative, political, and legal arenas, to purchase, possess and use firearms for legitimate purposes as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Google won't advertise non-gun-related items for sites that also sell guns or knives

After all the times I've been wrong when I thought something was illegal, I sure hope I'm right when I think something's legal!

I used to use duckduckgo, but Google is still way better at finding what I'm looking for. So back to Google for me.

Google and Bing are two sides to the same coin.
I typically use Ixquick or startpages. I only use google on my phone... As privacy on your cellphone is typically a futile endeavor anyway. I just restrict what I do with my phone, though Calguns is probably too much really.Comment
