    Communication devices (radios).

    Hi guys.

I'm looking for a member willing to point me into the right direction.

Basically what I'm looking for is a cause friendly supplier to assist in our community events.

I'm in need of a quote of communication devices, nothing fancy, 5 mile range class and capable to accommodate an ear piece (hands free, noise reduction capabilities are a must).

    Inclined into Midland but ...

Your input and assistance will be highly appreciated.

Please feel free to PM me at your earliest convenience.

    Lonewolf.

If nobody comes forward, I can give you some model numbers that were tested out and cost around $89 or less (MSRP) from a magazine called OFF GRID that I happened to pick up. They have stellar range, one set was Midland, the others were Cobra. I saw ranges set like 36 Miles in open or city I forgot. But I think the Cobras got the favorite reviews.
7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...

Need GOOD SS pins to clean your brass? Try the new and improved model...

since they are somewhat local - meaning you are both in the lower half of the state I would start here; http://www.surplusradios.com/

but realistically if all you need if a 5 mile range, and a handheld CB with sideband would probably work just fine, but I seem to recall that old surplus security/police radios could be found fairly cheap I just don't know of specific model numbers, which is that I think that you are looking for.

5 miles can mean many things..are you talking in a city, over open ground, across two valleys? 5 miles reliably for anything hand held that you don't need a licence for is going to be iffy, depending on terrain and elevations. License free you have FRS or CB or MURS. GMRS you are supposed to have a license if opperating at 5 watts, which all the "36 mile" handheld cobra/midland/motorolla do. GMRS would be my first suggestion, go buy a set of handhelds at any sports store for $50 and give it a try in your situation. If none of that works, 2 meter or 440 ham (especially if you have repeaters in your area) would work but everyone transmitting needs a license.

If this is for the SSZS than your "need" of 5 mile range is not anywhere near accurate. I have been to 3 and even provided a few good radios before, unfortunately i had to leave early that time. If you need it for the SSZS than any simple FRS radio will work. Any radio that has the ability to accept a remote speaker/mic will work for what you need. However active noise reduction circuitry in the headsets or whatever you plan on using is not as easy to acquire for FRS radios.
I work in a noisy environment and our commercial radios with noise cancelling mics barely make any difference. if what your looking for is along the lines of a pilots headset for noise cancelling, you are going to spend big bucks. If you are concerned that FRS radios are not powerful enough for you, I might suggest using VHF itinerant frequencies like the desert race teams do in our area. Yes they are doing it illegally as you must be licensed to use those frequencies, but it is never an issue as they are only using them for a day every few months and do not interfere with any critical comms. Disclaimer, I would NEVER ask you to violate the FCC regs.
I am a Licensed amateur radio operator and have been 'Playing' with RF for 30 years.

Also you did not specify how many people will be needing a handheld radio, and if there will be a command center with a manned base radio "good idea".

If there is anything that I can do to help, I am local for that event, if thats where your going with this post?
