I was thinking of putting together a 200gb HD, single core cpu and 256MB of RAM or more if I can find it. I gotta look, but in a box with a cdr and putting server 2003 on it.

IS there anything that a server needs? I can not afford to buy a new mobo with 16GB of ram and all that. I am ready to start playing with a domain at my house and I think this might do it nicely...

I guess it would be a PDC once it is on the network...

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? A single core processor & 256mb of ram won't run Windows 7 well, let alone a server OS.

Bad idea. If you are looking for a file-server, just use an old box and try a few Linux distros.

You need like a quad-core w/at LEAST 8GB of RAM to be moderately efficient. Server 2003 and Server 2008 both dragged their feet on my Pentium D w/ 3 GB of RAM, w/Sata2, and BARELY cuts it... and I have to sit and WAIT every time I click on something. I AM running the 64 bit version (as I have noticed that M$ doesn't really notice and fix issues w/32bit-version anymore mainly Windows 7-related). I just installed updates and 4 minutes after POST, I can finally RDP to it, and that is pretty typical here @ home. The next time I need to replace something in it, I will be dropping Linux on it instead, as I only use it for a file-server.

There really is not good reason I can think of to run a Windows Domain@home, unless you are looking for practical experience via use while studying for M$ certs, but then you will have to shell-out bigger-bucks for better hardware if you don't want a LOT of wasted wait-time.

(FYI most free Antivirus applications won't work with Server products.)

ONCE again I have looked around and realized that I have a plethora of computer parts and systems that people have just given to me on numerous occasions.

Now granted that these are OLDER systems, I figure that I can put a server OS on a machine and run it, and YES, MY BAD, I was thinking of the mobo that I just got with a 256MB dimm and running windows XP. (yeah it was a VERY bad experience) So I thought, Hey, since I just got exposed to active directory now and I did not even realize it, I want to explore it more at my house and continue making an enterprise network.

Here is what I am really looking at though, HP XW8600 Dual CPU System Board running two quadcore Xeon 3.0ghz CPUs.

I figure if I can get one and then throw it into a case with a dvd drive and a 200gb+ hdd then I should be able to install any server OS on it. I am not sure about RAM requirements though but since I can get this motherboard for around $50 used, and then maybe get the cpus for around $75 and RAM at around??? Then I should be able to complete the rest. I still want to get the domain/ enterprise network at my house and then move into account automation and learning more of this stuff. I was even thinking of buying that book at amazon for around $64-$120 that was like, SERVER 2012 or whatever from install to something and it looked like a very good read.

So yeah, I just wanna upgrade my network to an enterprise network at this point and I do not have a lot of money, but I can justify spending around $150 or maybe a tad more if I need to.

2003 server support ends next year I think, no more updates after that, and you'll be doing it over

I think 03 requires 2g ram minimum to install

So why build one.

I have not done it yet but everyone I know has been setting up Linex servers. From what I've seen I'm really curious. This might be the best way to go.

Samba 4 on Linux only works in a single DC configuration for AD and doesn't support cross forest trust.

So it will work fine for the purposes of basic testing, but full on learning and deployment is limited.

No to mention no legitimate organization would ever sell decommissioned hardware with software installed on it. They would wipe the drives for security reasons, not to mention possible legal issues with transferring the site license.

Shiz, if you really wanted to you could get a beefed-up i7 with like [oodle]GB of RAM (I think it would be supported?) and just run everything virtualized.

Windows 7 x86 ran better in a VM on Linux than it did natively on the same Pentium D machine(, probably due to drivers?).


Hahahaaaaa! you could run a VM of Server, create a domain, CAN YOU join a virtualized domain from the native OS? I would think you COULD...

I am only doing it so that I can play with it and see the procedures. In all honesty 2008 or 2012 was the main target, but 2003 was for free...

Stilly, I have a 2U Dell Poweredge 2650 server i can part with if you are interested. Its gonna take a couple of weeks, i have to sanitize the server before delivery. It will have no OS, but the server should be sound. I see you on the forum putting in effort to learn more so I figure I would pay it forward since this sever is EOL'd and you would benefit from it more than me. Just remember these servers are hungry for power and quite loud, fair warning. PM me for details.
