Apps or downloads to get around firewall?

So I am currently dorming at my university, but what gets sooo damn annoying is how the network (Wi-FI) has everything banned or blocked. Everything from T-nation, certain gun forums, or pages it deems to be any one of the following. "Pornography, obscene, violent, tasteless, sexually suggestive".

And the issue is that the damn thing doesn't just block things like porn and gore sites, the damn firewall bans everything and anything that *might have a hint of one of those I stated. Furthermore, are there any apps I can get or things I can do with my Ipad?

What school do you go to? I'm surprised that any University would content block.

Use a web proxy or a VPN.

sometimes you can get around using babblefish, and simply pick any language and have it translated to English.

+1 for a vpn. It's how people in China and other f'd up countries get past their national firewalls... it'll work for your dorm too.

Yeah man that worked for a little bit, but for some reason after a few uses the vpn I downloaded started saying it couldn't connect to the network. Do you have any idea why?

I kinda doubt it, but its possible they could have seen the traffic and blocked it..either manually or an automated system killed it. Try another vpn..maybe something using a weird port / protocol

Possible. I was running a vpn app called "vpn in touch", do you have any suggestions on apps that are worth the few bucks?

The free vpns are usually pretty slow and unreliable. If you can afford it, one year of a decent paid vpn costs around 50 bucks and will be much more reliable.

Aww ... his school won't let him watch porn and visit Stormfront.

                    That's just tragic.

But he's banned here, sooooooooooooooooo he probably won't get to see this. I personally use Private Internet Access. $30/yr.

Google "proxy server" like ocabj suggested. Read up and implement. Boom. Pornhub.com is all yours.

Nobody has suggested TOR? You can set up TOR to only connect to port 443 (That's the port used by the protocol HTTPS. That way all traffic looks like regular encrypted web traffic) Any idea what software they are using to implement the block? Visit the company web site and see HOW they block sites. Then it's easier to understand how to get around it.

VPN is basically a secure (encrypted) tunnel from your device to the VPN server which then reroutes your data as applicable. From a security standpoint, you'd use it if you think you are on a hostile network (e.g. public wifi).

There are ways to attack a VPN session, specifically man in the middle attacks, and while you should be able to see this happening, you'd be surprised how people ignore SSL warnings/errors when they establish a SSL or TLS connection.
