    Who here has a Roku 3 ?

I've been looking at alternatives to cable or at least to lower my package to the basic channels. I have a blu ray player that has apps such as Netflix, Crackle and Hulu. The only app I currently use it Netflix and maybe Youtube.

Would the Roku 3 be an improvement? I would be the most interested in the free channels. The only one i currently subscribe to is Netflix. I might try out Amazon when it expires.

Chromecast might be a cheaper alternative, though it only has netflix, HBO go, youtube, and Hulu.

I was pretty meh on it until plex was released for it. I use the chromecast with plex to stream all my media on my pc to whatever TV the chromecast is connected to.

With that setup I pretty much don't need any cable package.

The Xbox did the same thing but it was a pita to get mkv files to work(files over 4gb not recognized on the Xbox). Chromecast has no issues with whatever I throw at it through plex.

Edit: you can also use plex on roku I think.

I'll say that I have not had any other streaming devices before the Roku 3, but the picture quality is very excellent. Seems to have every selection of programming I'd ever want, especially now with the addition of YouTube. I subscribe to Netflix and have Amazon prime.

With all the problems I had with the Roku XDS (2100), I went with a Chromecast, and since I really only use Netflix, and Youtube on it, it has been great, and no lag like the Roku had(, not to mention Roku's bad updates that disabled the WiFi, or wired NIC [depending on the update]).

A few weeks later, we bought another Chromecast, and haven't had any real problems with either.

Roku has a 30-90 day warranty, and after that it is only e-mail support (unless they convince you to pay the extended phone warranty/extortion fee).

My Roku 3 has been rock solid. Love it. Replaced a sony blu-ray player with internet capability that was just a hunk of junk. I got all "Office Space" on it. Felt good.

The big differences between Netflix on a Blu-Ray (BD) player and Netflix on the Roku 3 is that Netflix updates the Roku version to bring it the latest and greatest features. A version installed on a BD player might be, if you are very lucky, updated once in the life of the device but even that is kinda rare.

Nothing including the Fire TV has the shear quantity of video sources that are available on a Roku 3. You probably won't be interested in more than a dozen or maybe two, but even that beats the handful of useful channels available on a Fire TV. If you just want a great all around streaming video device a Roku 3 is head and shoulders the best. The Roku 3 finally plays youtube videos but it just mirrors a Chrome plugin on your PC.

Where the Fire TV comes into its own is as an Amazon Prime player and as a budget gaming device. The Fire does Netflix very well but it's obviously an afterthought thrown in to make the device far more marketable. The Fire has a youtube app though. And as someone else mentioned XBMC is pretty awesome on the Fire but you have to side-load it to get it to work.

If you are cable cutting it's probably worth subscribing to both Netflix and Amazon Prime. Netflix has a much larger library but Amazon Prime gives access to much of HBO's library of original shows.
