Bittorrent Sync. Take your data out of third party hands.

Tons of DIY. Pogoplug/Shiva on the cheap end, roll your own server on the unlimited end. Your biggest challenge will be security and bandwidth/data consumption. Upkeep isn't for armatures either

Unless you're hosting your own storage, they can all look at your data. Including the government.

Even if you are hosting your own, they can. Fairly certain the NSA knew about Heartbleed for years and used it often for their end goals. There are no doubt other bugs they either know about or created in products as well.

They only secure system is offline, airgapped and never connected. Otherwise assume compromised and insecure and use accordingly.

If you use public storage, encrypt with multiple layers. TrueCrypt and GPG.

BitTorrent Sync - faster, more secure, and free.

My preferred implementation of Sync is on a NAS (Synology, NetGear, QNAP, etc) - physical storage is cheap these days - roll your own private cloud

                    The Synology boxes are great.

Stick either behind a SonicWall or something similar, set up a VPN....
Now you have your own cloud.

People could also get a PogoPlug or something.
