Just give it a static IP on your network (instead of DHCP) and no default gateway. Very little risk of it getting infected if it cannot access the Internet.
To use it for Internet access, setup RDP on another PC at the house. RDP to the Win7+ PC and then go to the Internet.
WinXP is going to be hugely exploited in mid-April and beyond. The bad guys are saving all their tricks until after April 8th, when there will be no more Microsoft patches for the OS.Comment

Hadn't planned on getting a new computer yet, all I do is text work, shopping for T-shirts etc on an AcerPower S series running XP Pro SP3. I bought this machine new way back there somewhere, it was whiz bang then and it still feels fine to me.
The 80GB HDD has only 45GB's on it, rest is free space.
Ran Zone Alarm for a bunch of years, don't remember why I don't have it now, uninstalled it for some reason.
Run MailWasher for email interception so I dump quite a bit before it gets to my computer.
UnHackMe monitor is running.
Run MalWareBytes every once in awhile.
I run CrapCleaner a couple times a week, it varies its dump from 2MB to 2GBs each time.
I play Solitaire or Free Cell sometimes.
Don't watch videos but I read a lot.
I am actively online about 5-6 hours per day average.
Very seldom disconnect from the DSL server.
Very seldom update the XP os, if it ain't broke I try not to fix it. I did do an update about 2 months ago. Its the only reason I use the IntExplore otherwise its Firefox.
Don't see a need to get a new computer, suppose I should though, expect the original HDD is probably do to go sneakers up on me. Floppie drive still works fine though I use the USB ports for the finger drives and headset.
Seems a waste to take out of commission, what do you do with an old computer? It is really quiet too, I like that.
Reckon I'll shop for a new computer now, just need a basic machine but want a Professional version of OS.
Really like this Acer and wifes ThinkPad, though I do want to get into Adobe Illustrator in order to vectorize some artworks for printing on T-shirts.
On to TigerDirect.

If you have an Xp machine you don't want to update.
1. Get a hardware firewall between you and the internet.
ZyXel or SonicWall (Dell) are good choices.
Put it in stealth mode and nobody can see the machine from the outside. The advantage is that hackers might be able to crash it but rarely can they compromise the device to get on your network. You can also filter types of traffic in and out.
2. Go only to known websites on that machine. Don't install any new software or browser extensions. The machine is now strictly an appliance.
3. Back up the machine with software that will allow a bare metal restore. Make sure that you backup now with the machine in a known state. you can restore it completely by doing a complete wipe and restore to a known state.
Personally i would just dump the old machine and get something new. YMMVComment

Just had a thought.
Could I take the hard drive from this old XP Pro SP3 Acer and put it in a newer Windows 7 or 8 machine?
Or use it as an external drive to access whats on it now and use it until it dies?
Ought to make it easier to transfer apps and files to new machine.
Like everyone else I'm sure, I do not like setting up a new machine, I'd rather put the time into sorting my sock drawer.

If you're just trying to salvage old data ... probably. So long as it's a SATA drive. If it's IDE, you might run into trouble - relatively few new computers come with IDE connectors on the board anymore.
If you're trying to put it in and boot the new computer into Windows XP ... almost certainly not.NRA Life Member

And it is an IDE, oh well, thanks.
