I won't buy another Roku. I have an XDS (2100) the top of the line when I bought it, and it has always had buffering issues even when wired. I did a test with multiple other devices on the same network pipe (same cord) and the other devices had ZERO issues. It can't seem to keep up with an HD stream, and always rebuffers to SD in almost everything. It isn't my Internet pipe, as I have:


Roku has dropped updates that have made the Wireless non-functional, then another update that made the wired non-functional, both functioned in subsequent updates, but their warranty IS only good for 30-90 days via phone from date of purchase, unless you pay a "extended warranty/rape fee" for an additional period of telephone-support and hardware warranty past the 30-90 days. They acted as if it were a hardware problem, when clearly it wasn't as I have been running it 3 more years after the "fixed" updates.

Screw Roku! Never again...

Could be something with your router and whether it gives preference to some traffic over others. I have it in reverse. Mine gives priority to video so the TVs work but then everyone has lags using the web at the same time.... My Roku works with wireless at 720p.

Chromecast is a subsidized product. They are selling a lot of hardware for $35.

It is cloud/IP based and only goes to Hulu Netflix.... ect. Cool hardware but worthless if you want to move your own video across the room - low res also.

I get it. It does need a backend to do anything (theirs or your own with a home media center)... and when streaming from my media center it can only handle low res or it gets laggy and the voice is out of sync.

Using Plex as a media server with Chromecast. Works great. Plex, Netflix, YouTube, etc. Can play from our phones, laptops, or tablets.

I just bought a Chromecast for like $37, and we shall see how it works... (We have like 8 Androids in this house [we don't pay for iPhruity devices that send out info the the NSA willingly].)

So far I'm liking mine because now whoever wanted to watch the show on the living room TV started it and has their own remote (re: the phone or pad they started the show with....).

Was a super pain to need to find the youtube video they wanted to watch on my PC to send it to the TV...

It talks to every endpoint / viewer / tv box / phone / whatever I can think of. In the house, out of the house, whatever.

It started as a transcoding content aggregator (example: it pulls all the stuff from say CNN website and makes it look like a "CNN Channel") but has been expanded into a full media center app over time.

Just get any good Android tablet with hdmi or one that support mhl. Or have smart TV and at least have any android device running 4.3 and above miracast it.

DAHAUM! I just got my Chromecast last night and I must say I am impressed.

There can be about 2 seconds of lag when you tell it to pause, but other than that it was flawless last night, and after selecting the Chromecast as the display device for streaming, the Netflix app works pretty nice as a remote for it.

I used to use a Roku (and that wouldn't stop RE-buffering over the last year, or two) with Roku remote apps on our Androids, but this Chromecast is really amazing how well it works. I will have to check it with some other apps, and might subscribe to Hulu now that I have a Chromecast.
