android tv unit that works?

Hi all. I've tried 5 and only had one that sorta worked (and the Sony was not it; returned that sucker).

Does anyone know of one that would be considered good by a non enthusiast?

Re: Hulu and Netflix work, flash can work, can play non flash video w/o running out of memory, can handle video transitions (like hulu switching from an advert back to the program / actual show), no audio issues (popping sounds et cetera due to a bad codec), random crashes are once a month or less, doesn't have some absurdly small amount of Android OS 'internal storage', works with some variety of Android programs, wireless doesn't overheat and go down when in use, unfortunately... I could go on.... but you get the idea.

Yeah; thats the kind of thing I want to avoid (ummm; avoid doing for a sixth time).

All good advice; I use a Roku and a Sony Blueray now. They 'just work' right. But I can't drop to the OS level in either and add programs.

I would like something like a MK808B if I could find something that worked.

Being able to run gotomeeting, Kindle, text, email, remote desktop into work computers, play android games, et cetera on my TV computer... would be cool...

Sounds like a good idea. I could use a brand name (re: Samsung) pad with my TV. But its my understanding though that the downside is they don't work with all (or even that many) programs.

I'll check into it though. Thanks. If someone has cracked them to send everything that would work.

chromecast works great with the cast browser function. What else are you trying to watch? Any video playing in your tab can be streamed and maximized to full screen. Hulu would be one of those examples. Works just fine with Netflix and youtube.

Only downside is, some apps aren't optimized for it yet, but Google has promised something like 30 more this year. I really only use it for Youtube and Netflix, but I'm pretty sure they have Hulu support now.

OP do yourself a favor & forget the streamers like roku WD.... just pick up a used computer off Craigslist or repurpose one that you have laying around & drop in a decent video card (last one i bought was $40 on amazon) & download XBMC or hell just use VLC & a browse.

Do this forget the little boxes you wont be sorry. If you need help with xbmc pm me I'll set you straight with easy to follow youtube vids and the right repos to get.

It is 1000000 times better than a roku or wd tv live I have all three and I always use my old cpu to watch movies and surf the interwebs on my tv. Good luck!

Trying out the chromcast.

Pretty cool.

You guys should also look at Playon. Not as polished as XBMC but easy access to a lot of content transcoded for a lot of end point viewers (whether it is a wii or a flash-less iphone; everything is transcoded and sent as something they can display). I'm able to send playon stuff to the TV with the chrome browser so I can pretty much watch anything....

Agree. Roku's are GTG (I have one and buy them for others). I want[ed] something that could get me full android on a TV... that actually worked right for video. But I think its still 'not there yet'. The Sony android products su*k (so even a big company's development people can't do it right). The Chinese products all have fatal glitches that make them unusable.

As of right this minute; the Roku does everything I'm going to use the chromecast for... but maybe Google will add some more stuff down the line.

Has it; but Hulu deadended pre jellybean android users on an old no chromecast support version of hulu... so I can't do it from my phone.

I can send hulu to the chromecast via my laptop a couple ways but both are sub optimal video quality.

Still; $35 and works. I'll hold onto it and see what happens with the product.

Chromecast is a subsidized product. They are selling a lot of hardware for $35.

It is cloud/IP based and only goes to Hulu Netflix.... ect. Cool hardware but worthless if you want to move your own video across the room - low res also.
