    Is this notebook repairable?

My son has an ASUS K55N notebook. According to the sticker on it, it has an A8 processor which I believe, based on the ASUS website, is a 4500M. The ASUS website also indicates that it has AMD Radeon Mobility HD7640G graphics.

He managed to spill water on the computer screen and keyboard. Shortly after, the screen went dead and has remained dead since. The computer powers on. We hooked up an external monitor but couldn't get it to work so I suspect that the graphics are disabled.

I have assembled a desk top computer but have never looked inside a notebook. Since the graphics are integrated, I assume that I can't just put a graphics card into the computer and call it a day. Is there any cost effective way to fix this?
Check back later for a witty comment.

That processor has the graphics integrated within the chip ie; no separate graphics card (unless there is one with the laptop). So if thats the case, your processor or MOBO might have been fried. I dont know.

There is a difference between "powering up" and actually "turning on" with everything working...Ya know? Water and laptops dont mix

For the price point of Asus laptops, its probably cheaper to buy another one at todays prices. no sense of buying the top line model since most laptops are throw -away after a couple years.

Possible that the vga port needs to be enabled in bios. When you boot up laptop alternate f2 and delete and see if your external monitor starts to work. You can also try f5. It's a long shot but you've got nothing to lose. Good luck.

At least you can pull your HDD out and recover your data if you get a new laptop. PM me if you need help.

You got it right, and so do others, but I love a challenge...

SO, with that said, did you press the EFFIN key?

fn key also known as a Function key. On laptops there is a key that is labeled FN and if you press it ALONG with a blue/purple coded key you can change the video output, simply plugging in a monitor is not enough, you must usually press the FN key to switch modes. It might be possible that you just need to replace the lcd on it, but that can be a PITA depending on your model and I have not even bothered to research this, but basically at this point, EBAY is your friend. If you have the knowhow to take it apart, then you will find that if you can replace the LCD that you might be good. However, please only attempt that if you do not mind losing it altogether and if you have extra money to spend. You might try to press the FN key anyways and see if maybe cycling through the 3 modes you get your lcd screen turned back on. Perhaps something just made the mode change. You should also try the following, because MAYBE all is well, just with a minor flip here or there.
If you know for a FACT that the machine powers up and boots, but just with no screen, then take a flashlight and hold it pointed DOWN at a 45 degree angle to the screen while it is powering up and see if you can read anything. It could be possible that you just blew your power inverter or CFL (if it has one) for the LCD and you need to replace it. Ya never know until you look at it from all angles. Usually when a computer has a BAD part like anything plugged into the motherboard it will gladly tell you when it failed. If it acts like it is nothing and continues to boot up, then the fix might be easy. And yes, you are not just gonna be able to plug in a different graphics card.- And that processor might only be good in a laptop so no using it in a home computer with no adapter.

          What city are you in?

          Good luck.

Did you buy it with a credit card? If you did, some credit cards add a free warranty on the purchase. I have a costco American express, over the years, they fixed a laptop for me and gave me a complete refund on annother electronic device that was unrepairable.

it is probably salvageable but to what extent is on you & how much time effort you are willing to put in to it... that said.

the first thing that you should do - pull the drive & copy anything that you want/need off of it... or do what I do & just copy the entire drive, but then again I have plenty of storage

water damage like that is only repairable by replacing the motherboard, which is never worth the cost if not covered by an extended warranty.

Once liquid gets into the internals, things start shorting out, causing permanent damage. You'd be surprised how long it takes for liquid to dry out inside a laptop. Most don't have any air movement inside the case, and the only fans they might have directly cool the cpu and graphics. I bet you'll still see puddles of liquid in there if you disassemble it.

Did you try putting it in a sealed up bag of rice?
I brought a net book back to life with this method over a year ago and it's still going strong. This after I spilled a large soda on it and rinsed it off with a garden hose.

I say pull the HDD and copy whatever you want to save, and then put it back and have a blast messing around with it, inside and out. I you can't fix it, no big deal, give him your old one and get yourself a newer better model.
                      Win-win!
