For reference, this is sitting on top of my 4770k.

Now humming along at 4.3ghz. Prime95 large FFTs can run for 24 hours and temps max at 78c. Idle temps still 28-32c

That's the same stock cooler that the 4770k ships with.

Using that, even with my new thermal paste, extra fans, and whatnot ... I'm hitting 90+ within 2-3 minutes of starting to render.

You do have to admit just looking at it, that is one very light-weight cooler. By any standard. I had no idea they had skimped so much. I was under the impression it was more sizeable. There isn't enough surface area there.

well it is small but cpu's these days are low power for the performance they put out. both the 3770 and 4770 are under 85 watt cpu's so while the hs looks small it should be just fine. There has to be countless systems out there running on the stock hs with no problem at all. Plus you still had problems with an underclock. Add all this up and Im still thinking something other then the hs (assuming it is working correctly) is causing your problems.

I returned to normal clock settings now, after changing out the thermal paste. Temps are idling at low to mid 30's, and I can do most things - video transcoding, etc. - without getting too high in temperature. However, as soon as I push all 8 threads to 100%, I will be at 90+ inside of 3 minutes.

Okay, so ... I think I may possibly have discovered why I was overheating.

Or, rather, one of the factors, anyway.

I just went back and re-evaluated some of the switch settings, and then changed them back to the way that I had them set originally. Turns out the little go-fast switch on the motherboard? That doesn't just enable overclocking. That actually just turns the motherboard loose to make the chip go just as fast as it can run without exploding. I'm amazed that I was able to idle as low as the mid-50's ... because this thing was sitting at 4.5 gHz. With the stock cooler.

So anyway, I put the switch back to that position today, just to see what would happen. Sure 'nuff, with the new thermal paste I'm idling around 46 right now. Still better than the mid-50's from before, but higher than I want for idle. As soon as I hit full load though, jesus. I would never have expected to even make it through booting up like that. That was a 28% overclock, with just the stock cooler!

I really need to get water cooling now.

Yeah I found a bunch at Fry's on open box for less than $15, with all the parts too

Great MOBO'S!! Im running it with a i3 2100 but for some reason it seems to benchmark higher than i5's? So I kind of know what your workin with!
