Indeed, the new i7s are great processors.

I wish I could find an excuse to buy one. Games don't count. I am still on my old Unlocked Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition. It gets the job done but the i7s blow me away every time I play with one.

If you want I can find a way to share file that you can use to bring your i7 to it's knees. Everytime the new bee's knee of processors comes out I whip out a file for render testing that is so intense on the lighting and volumetrics calculations it can kill anything I've ever tested it on. Even i7s.

Right now - and I know that WEI is bull**** - I'm sitting at a 7.8, and that's limited by my 5 year old video cards.

I'm using the stock cooler and the same cooling setup as on my previous 125W CPU. I'm idling right now at 50-54 degrees. I had one BSOD earlier due to temperature, and when I rebooted I recorded a max temp (from Core Temp 1.0 RC5) of 81 degrees.

Obviously I'd like to get water cooling, but here's the thing: if the stock air cooler wasn't going to be enough to run this chip at base frequency, then why would Intel use it?

just leave the stock cooler on and turn you pc into a easy bake pc oven
bake a small cake and a few cookies while you game or crunch video files everyone loves fresh bakes good. hell you could heat up a Hot Pocket in a 3.5" slot. Ohhh the possibilities

I never understood "fast" unless it was the time measured for solitaire to be dealt out for a new game. How does a cpu dictate mouse tracking speed? or are you just being funny? In most tasks I never see my cpu pushed past 25% load. I still benchmark but only to see how a new graphics card performs vs the replaced unit but that is about it for me.

Intel stock coolers are junk. I prefer air cooled using Cooler Master's Hyper cooler which is cheap and effective.

yeah the Hyper 212 has set the standard for some time now. Cant really beat the performance for the cost. Some closed loop water cooling systems cant beat the performance of the Hyper 212 but those are typically less noisy. On the flip side I once had and Athlon II x2 250 and the stock cooler did fine even under aggressive overclocking. Sure its a dual core but hey it was good enough at the time and was crazy cheap.

Using an NZXT Havik 140 on my 4770k, idle temps are ~28c load maybe 50c. Ditch the stock intel junk. Their coolers are barely enough to keep the chip alive.

I don't use my desktop so much anymore but I'm still happy with the 2600k I got in there running at 5ghz on air 24/7 acting as a NVR web server + general use

How is the stock cooler being thermally connected?

Bare? The Pad? or something like Arctic Silver Paste?

How is the airflow in the case? Cabling tied up? Fans working to pull air across the cooler?

Paste. Started with the stock paste from Intel, switched it out yesterday with something different. Not a brand I'm familiar with. I think it was called STAR-700 or something? It's 10% silver, at any rate.

All the fans are working. 2x120mm intake, 1x120 and 1x90 exhaust.

Temps are better today than before. I'm idling at low-mid 30's now, instead of the low-mid 50's from before the new paste and adding another fan. Got through wPrime 32M in 6.39 seconds at max 63 degrees. Still hit 86 during wPrime 1024M, though, and I cancelled it at 33% done.

We'll see how this does with rendering and other highly multithreaded loads ...

Impressive Processor indeed.

However you would not want to compare it to my optimized Pentium 4 running Windows Me with a full gig of ram. I only run the best.
