Help with u-tube download sw...

I wanted to download a few u-tube videos, convert them to a format that will play in my Land Cruiser, and burn to dvd's.

So, yesterday I went to good ol' Cnet, downloaded a couple of programs, and the crap hit the fan.

What I ended up with were quite a few trojans, mainly tracking junk, that changed my web browser, installed a new search engine, and in the end dumped all the icons off my Win 7 desktop.

After some time with malwarebytes and some work getting the icons back, all is well...but what a pita.

Can anyone help with sw that actually does only what it's supposed to do, instead of adding a ton of crap to my system?

There isn't anything for Chrome but there are several Firefox plugins available directly from the plugin menu that do the job painlessly, just look for ones with 1000+ reviews. I've used Flash Video Downloader and it gives you lots of choices.

When I get home I'll check the one I use on my laptop. I don't recall the name off the top of my head. It actually places a new button on your youtube video called "Download" and gives you options for file format type, resolution, etc. Works great.

Try this service. It's an online service, no software to install. You just paste the URL of the youtube video you want and it would give you avalable choices of formats and resolutions for downloads.

It is better because they do not allow MGID advertising on their site. MGID is a BS website that often posts picz that are unrelated to a story in hopes of getting you to go there and once there they get to use you are part of their stats. Normally I do not care, but MGID is PURE BS. They post stories and they make you think one thing, then you go there expecting to see something, and three clicks later you are like, WTF? Where is the **** you had mentioned earlier?
Total BS site... Any place that has MGID links I will talk **** on. Savevid.com is also better because they have a list that will show you what other folks are downloading and then you can also download them too...

You do need to install their plugin for IE but once installed you can go to this page and paste the url of the youtube video and then it will give you several choices.

Stay away from all of that crap that promises you free software to d/l Media Taxie Suite is one VERY big rip off. I had their **** installed once and I went to you-tube and grabbed a video url and posted it in the page and it grabbed the video for me, then about a month passed and I did the same thing, except just about EVERY time media taxie wants you to REINSTALL the entire suite because they release an update. Well, I refused that update once so the software told me that it needed updating in order to d/l the youtube video. That was when I got pissed and uninstalled it all. No, what it wanted was another chance to make me install a whole slew of programs and maybe I would screw up and forget to uncheck the boxes where my search engine was changed and I had three more search bars added to IE... Yeah WTF ever... In going to savevid.com ov er the past 3-4 years, I have only had to install the plugin twice, once to install and once to update it, but I might have had it disabled, so it thought it needed installing again.
**EDIT I made a mistake here Sound Taxie has a COOL program that records streaming videos, They are decent, I forgot the name of the FREE YOU TUBE downloading software, but they have a WHOLE slew of programs for video and sound and conversion and everything multimedia related. THEY are the ones that I hate and got rid of, not sound taxie. Sound Taxie has Rip Tiger. AWESOME program.

You will know when you get the free you-tube downloader I am talking about because every few days it will want you to UPDATE to the newer version and if you say no, then it will tell you that it can not continue to grab you tube videos even though nothing has changed... THAT is when you uninstall it, and then they pop open a webpage wanting to know why you uninstalled them, that is when you tell them where to go and why...

Yeah, I knew that, but I wanted to see you say it.

I do not use firefox. I use IE because I am lazy and do not care for the whole MS rebellion crap. IE works and many sites are built for it so I use it.

When I use other things like opera or FF or others, things do not always display properly...

Not sure what sites you look at but IE doesn't work with half of the internet these days... Chrome is even worse. Opera or Firefox seem to be the only ones capable of displaying things correctly. Firefox SUCKS with Java though... well, java just sucks in general but Firefox makes it worse.
