    WarThunder Anyone?

So I've been playing WarThunder, a F2P game based on air combat. Planes range from WW1 to Korean War. It is currently still in open beta so not all planes have been added but there is a lot already on there.

There are three types of game modes:
Arcade - Very forgiving flight models
Historical Battle - Slightly more realistic flight model
Full Real Battle - full on sim

and while each mode offers different flight models, the damage models are the same through all three.

Play for free with friends in the most realistic online game

my invite code for those that want to try, and yes it gives me a bit of in-game money bonus, but it also gives you the same amount so we both benefit.

My game name - Crookedcrew in case anyone want to get a flight going. There is in-game chat for only those that are in the same flight so we can easily talk/coordinate while in-game.

Looks like it might be fun, but I'm not sure I'll ever be able to find out.

I've got a Thrustmaster HOTAS-X, which is explicitly supported by the game ... but I've also got a 3DConnexion SpacePilot, and it appears that the game prefers to try and run using the (unplugged) SpacePilot, rather than using the joystick.

We'll see if this gets sorted out or not ...

Hope you get your issues worked out.

and for those that don't have joysticks, the game runs fine with mouse/keyboard (for arcade/historical only. Full Real Battle needs joystick)

Hm. Finally got it sorted out.

This game is a decent bit of fun. Depressingly difficult, at times.

Well, it was all fun and games for a while. I was averaging 5+ kills per game.

And then I hit level 2.

My Brewster Buffalos are getting chewed the **** up by ME109's and the like. I haven't scored a single kill since hitting level 2.

I tried it and it was way too hard to control with just a mouse & keyboard,so i'm sticking to World Of Tanks.

you shouldn't be pitted against bf109's as they are tier 6 aircraft. that is unless you are playing historical battles(low population) or during very low server population time in arcade in which the matchmaker just dumps everyone together. (i had once flown against me262's and mig 15 in my tier 4 craft.... was not fun at all)

if you are playing late at night, switch to the EU server. that is what i do and the extra lag for me is not noticeable.

btw did you add me to your friend's list? maybe we can get together in a flight.

the controls aren't that hard? you just point with mouse and the plane just goes there. in arcade mode, the "instructor" takes most of the intricacies out of flying. almost like fly-by-wire of today's airplanes.

I haven't added you yet. I keep forgetting. I'll get to it though, I promise!!!!

I'm routinely seeing 109's, 110's, Spitfires and Hurricanes in Arcade. I don't think it's low server population - there's several hundred people online when I've been playing.

Is keyboard and mouse easier than stick and throttle?

for me, yes only cause i've never had a joystick before.

but in arcade mode, mouse/keyboard rules since flight models is very generous. and so the mouse provides superior aiming (at least generally)

joysticks don't really shine until you get into historical battles where better flight control is vital. (ie joystick users can move planes in ways that mouse users can't due to the more basic controls that mouse users are limited by.)

Downloaded the game, but need a better video card to run it. Got a 7800GT at the moment, looking at the 650gtx as an affordable upgrade.
The flight modes remind me of Air Warrior back in the day.
Got the full CH pedals, stick and throttle set up, as well as a trackir 3. From what I've read, looks like the game supports it all.
                      Cant wait to play it.

i currently run a gtx 650, and i get ~58fps with it dropping to ~30fps in heavy battle areas where there are bombs exploding and crazy amount of tracer fire and planes burning up all in close proximity. (which is actually really rare situation)

I'm running it on a pair of ATI 4870 512MB cards in crossfire. Not sure what the FPS is - the text is too small to read at 1080p - but no performance problems... just frustration with using stick and throttle. I'm going to give keyboard and mouse a try, see how that works out.

Ah! Finally got a good name in-game: I'm now known as Jayne_Cobb.

Also, I was finally able to pick out the text in the FPS display. I'm getting steady 30-45 FPS under all circumstances. Doesn't matter how many tracers or burning planes there are, doesn't matter what's happening or how many aircraft are swirling around in the furball, it's steady between 30 and 45.

What are your system specs, if you don't mind my asking. Trying to gauge how it will run on mine.
I've got an intel duo 2 quad 6700, planning on upgrading to 8 gigs of memory and an nvidia gtx650 graphics card. I think I've got some room to upgrade the cpu too if needed.

It's been my experience with combat flight sims/games, you need at least 30 fps to be playable; the more the better.
