    Mobile WiFi Recommendations?

(I used the search button first....)

I need WiFi for a few days a month when I travel. I only want to pay as I go as needed. I use Magic Jack Plus which is great and I can make and receive calls from my iPad. My cell phone is non-smart, pay as you go, which works well and is cheap.

So, has anyone used: http://www.webonthego.com/ ? Mobile Hotspot, $4.59/month, $59 for the device, $0.035 per MB for use. They say the average bill is $10-12 per month.

Walmart has similar devices/plans but this seems to be cheaper and should do the job.

I don't need to stream video, just general use. So is this a good idea?

    Thanks!

if you are not contract bound- give it a try and let us know how it works out for you.

I would even consider that for my tablet or laptops. JUST be very careful of what you d/l.

It's not a bad deal. Keep in mind that many smartphones now allow you to use them as a "mobile access point". If you went this route, you would have one less device to carry around and recharge, etc

It uses the sprint network. My experience with the sprint data network was awful. Between 8-6 the network was so slow it became unusable.

As soon as I could dump Sprint, I switched to Verizon. Maybe the network is better where you are located, but in the IE/Riverside area you would be happier without internet access.

I know that with Verizon data plans that include LTE, and T-Mobile devices under the new recent plans, some tethering is included and required for them to give you.

I would check with your cell provider, as many will give you 2gb of tether for $15/month, as I recall with old plans (as-always... Verizon a bit more, with old plans).

                Rooted smart phone

You could also get a cheaper android smartphone via craigslist or ebay, and have it rooted, or buy a rooted phone, or root it yourself (i'm not a IT guy and was able to do it using youtube videos). HTC evo 4g, or motorola droid x are a couple that should be cheap used. After it is rooted, you can download a free wifi tether program (from google) and have completely FREE wireless tether of 3G or 4G, and be able to connect up to 5 devices on the EVO.

I encourage everyone to do this to their android smart phones. otherwise, the carriers charge customers up to 30 dollars a month for a service that YOUR phone is capable of doing, that YOU bought. It basically gives you administrative access to your phone - something you deserve as the OWNER of that device. and yes it does void your warranty, but rooting is a software process that can easily be reversed. and if you get a 50 dollar HTC evo online, you probably don't care about the warranty. for more info on rooting check out:

I vote for the Virgin Mobile Overdrive hotspot because Virgin offers better prepaid plans. $5 for 200MB for one day; $35 for 2GB for one month; $55 for 5GB for one month. Check out: http://www.virginmobileusa.com/mobil...2-go/overview/
