Yes, it's a scam. They've been doing it for a few years, but have ramped it up in the past couple of years. Microsoft doesn't call people.

Probably got your name and number from a list they bought/found, it's a simple enough guess that enough people have a computer running windows these days to be able to just call people and find one with a windows box.

Yeah, this is an old scam revisited.

BS, and they are out for your money and possibly access to your computer...

next step would of been them recommending that you purchase "antivirus/antimalware" software. They then direct you to a website where you enter your cc info. to download the software. Your identity has been stolen at that point.

this is how another CGer dealt with the Microsoft call

Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
          (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

            SCAM!

But have some fun with them next time. Act scared that you might lose your data or have your identity stolen, and beg them for help. Keep saying that the instructions they are giving (don't actually do any of them) you aren't working, and start to sound like you are gonna cry. Waste as much of their time as is possible. Then ask for his home phone number so you can call him back later, when he declines say, "why not, you don't want someone trying to scam you calling you at home?"

Then wait for the tirade of profanity and insults coming from the phone!
            Sorry, not sorry.
            🎺

Dear autocorrect, I'm really getting tired of your shirt!

Yes. Act inept and it really pisses them off.

Yeah, just like the Government does NOT call you to tell you that they have a grant for you and then have you call Mike Parker in South Carolina in order to give him your CC number for processing fee so that they can dump $7k into your bank account...

If they call back make fun of their accent or just keep saying butt-plug in a low voice and see if they pick up on it. Have some fun with them at least.
