Just Moved. Need Internet. What do you Recommend?

I just moved in to a different house, and I would like to get reliable high-speed internet. I do not need or want TV or Phone, or any bundles. Just Internet.

I am hoping to be around $40 a month, after taxes and fees. Is that possible?

I looked at Verizon, but they don't offer just internet, and if you bundle it with a basic phone plan (just so I can get the internet) it was $45 before taxes and fees.

Can any other provider beat that?

Also, I would prefer to pay month by month, not a 12 or 24 month agreement...

If you can get Verizon Fios, go for that. They had (I used to have it ) incredible speeds. Not sure about them now.

Time Warner lets you get just the internet. Starts at $30 I think? We have their top tier 50mb download speed, it's $85 or so.

Look at AT&T DSL Direct -- Internet only and no taxes or fees and they have a plan "around $40 a month". Sure, it's slower, but it needs your needs.

Other than that, your only other choice may be Comcast Xfinity. You don't need bundle either, but speeds and prices will be slightly higher.

BTW, it's hard to recommend anything because you don't list your location.

I've got Verizon FIOS - TV, Internet & phone. It is not cheap but it is reliable and fast.

When I first moved out to the sticks, all I could get was dial-up until DSL-Extreme came out with their offering (15MB IIRC) Worked fine for most stuff.

We use FIOS now that it's in the area. (just Internet and phone)

Went with Charter. $30 month for 250gb at 30mbs... Think that will work?

                        that's pretty good. what's the u/l speed?

is the $30 a contract or bundle price?

i'm paying probably twice that with comcast but no caps right now. (i only broke that cap limit twice but no complaints from comcast. been using them since '05). but it's pure internet only.

Your best bet is to talk to your neighbors and find out what actually works in your neighborhood. Just because something seems like a good deal money wise doesn't really matter if your connection drops all the time. I deal with this crap every day of my life and every provider is different depending on the location.

$30 a month, good for 12 months, no contract, can cancel any time. 4Mbps Upload, 30Mbps download

I talked to some neighbors and they have Charter, and they highly recommended it.

I've been a long time Charter customer (on and off)... I ditched them early last year, but ended up going back. Must have to say, I'm pretty impressed with their upgrade/improvements. Very fast and steady connection now... good choice.
